AND yet another grim story out of Boston…about…guess what…the BIG DIG. This is turning into a big dump. They call these minor defects? Then what would a major one look like?
BOSTON – Inspectors checking construction work in the Interstate 93 tunnels have found 25 more wall panels with minor defects, bringing the total number of problem panels to 134, Big Dig officials announced on Thursday.
The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, at its weekly briefing, said that 20 panels were found to have defects that will require patches, while five more have defects that will require “moderate repair.”
Inspection work for all 2,000 panels was expected to be completed by the end of the weekend, and the sum of all of the faulty panels known in coming weeks, said Turnpike spokeswoman Mariellen Burns. Twelve panels have been repaired, and 20 are in the process of being fixed.
The Big Dig has been checking all of the wall panels since a tunnel breach opened last September, gushing water into one of the tunnels and stopping traffic. The Turnpike Authority promised a top-to-bottom review of all the construction work.
