Election Day Across the Pond

Posted by Raven on May 5th, 2005

Today is Election Day across the pond…Great Britain. I haven’t read too much about what we think about this, but here I found something I agree with:

Labour? Huh? Isn’t the British Labour Party chiefly made up of left-leaning nanny-Staters? Well, yes. But unlike the American political system, the British don’t vote for a candidate so much as a political party. The man (or woman) who becomes PM is chosen by the party hierarchy. So why Labour? Two words: Tony Blair.

I love this statement:

Tony Blair stood up in the face of political unpopularity and put his balls on the table. He may pay a political price at the polls a month from now. But at least he’ll be able to sleep at night, knowing he did the right thing. Doing the right thing is almost never the popular thing. It’s always easier to appease and dodge and avoid facing the enemy rather than to summon the courage to face it like a man – just look at the French.

Good luck PM Blair. I’ll be checking in to see how you’re doing.

UPDATE: CNN predicts Blair to be the WINNER.

LONDON, England (CNN) — A BBC/ITN exit poll has projected a reduced majority for Tony Blair’s Labour party of 66 seats after polls closed in Britain’s general election.

The first actual result in Sunderland South in north eastern England was a win for Labour, as expected, with a slightly reduced majority over the Conservatives.

The first newly returned MP Chris Mullin said that it showed Blair would be back for a historic third term in office.

CNN’s European Political Editor Robin Oakley said that a victory of 66 seats would be “on the margin” for Blair with some ammunition for his critics.

Oakley cautioned, however, that exit polls in British elections have been wrong in the past.

The Conservatives were projected by the exit poll to have won 209 seats, the Liberal Democrats 53 and other parties 28.

Totally agree; in a normal world, I’d naturally be inclined to quiety root for the Conservatives over there, but after how principled, determined, and supportive Blair has been here’s hoping his party romps (which they will likely do).

I have liked this guy from the first time I saw him during Prime Minister’s Question Time, when he was a member of the House of Commons. Not that his politics agreeed with me, but his character always stoodd out. I was not surprised to see him push his chin out so stoically in supporting W in Iraq — an unflappable man of conviction and intellectual honesty.

  8. Raven Says:

I’ve always liked Tony Blair-not his politics but his personhood. He is a man who will stand up for what is right, even when it isn’t popular. It takes a strong person to do this. ANd when you’re a leader it means you’re really strong.
