Battle Begins

The battle will begin today to save Portsmouth Shipyard. This hits home for me because my brother in law works there, and lives in Kittery. But I have no confidence in Govenor Lynch’s ability to help.
CONCORD — The governors and congressional delegations of New Hampshire and Maine will talk today via conference call to develop a case for keeping the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard open.
New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch said yesterday, “We’re going to talk about our collective strategy in terms of going forward….. We all believe it was a mistake to put the shipyard on the list for closure.”
Whatever measure is used, he said, Portsmouth performs better than any other competing shipyard, public or private, Lynch said.
Last week, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld included Portsmouth on a list of 33 major installations he wants to shut down. The proposed base closures and realignments would save $48 billion over 20 years, according to Pentagon figures.
