Iraq: Women’s Rights

Posted by Raven on August 5th, 2005

My blog friend Kathleen has asked for some help. Please read this and go to her blog for more info. It’s important for the women of Iraq to have the same freedoms as American women.

Thursday, August 4th, the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (http://www.defenddemocracy.org/) along with Women’s Alliance for a Democratic Iraq (http://www.wafdi.org/home) and several other women’s rights and democracy advocates from Iraq, went to Washington DC and New York City to request assistance from the US Congress and the UN Council on Human Rights in helping them secure women’s rights for freedom, representation in the government and security under the rule of civil law in Iraq. These ladies appeared on CSPAN at the National Press Club to a small, but interesting group of journalists and activists. Sadly, very few large media organizations, if any, were there to listen, question and prepare to write about these women and their issues. Most were very busy trying to decipher Ayman al Zawahiri’s latest rant against freedom and democracy.

Thanks!
