Sometimes we’re like lemmings

Posted by Raven on February 5th, 2006

The other day I reacted to the CARTOON issue with my feelings and not with thinking. It happens to me all the time and I am learning to hold back judgement until more is known.

While I do think MANY Muslims are using this issue to stir the pot of hatred and miscontent, many more are not. Most of them are just outraged about this and I would be as well. Imagine and consider how we would feel. Remember how we felt when we saw images of Pakistani’s burning our FLAG on Sept. 11th… We felt hurt, violated. It’s time to look at this CARTOON stuff differently.
I’m not condoning the behaviors we’re seeing now, burning embassies and all that bullshit. I’m more concerned about the overall effect this has had on the world. It’s not good and I’m not adding to the fray with it.

Blog friend Rick Moran has taken the same stance:

There is a clash of civilizations going on as I write this. I happen to believe the civilization I live in represents a way of life and thinking that offers the best hope for all of humanity to live as they were intended while extending material benefits that prolong life, hold out the promise of good health, and enjoin its members to achieve a state of being that allows for common people to realize their hopes and dreams both for themselves and for their children. If we are to win this fight, it will not come by force of arms but rather by the strength of our commitment to the battle itself. We don’t give anything up by empathizing with others when pain is inflicted. We do however, lose ground when – whether intentionally or not – we force feed our views of freedom on people who have no cultural touchstone that would enable them to understand what we are trying to accomplish.

    Thanks for the link, hon.

I stop by far to infrequently anymore – both here and other places like Beth’s and Cao’s. I’m working harder on my writing, trying to put more thought into each post as well as doing more research which has cut back my blog excursions considerably.

Drop me a line and let me know how you’re doing.

Chief, I agree with you. BUT, this isn’t about US vs. THEM. All the images we’re seeing on the TV news programs are real for sure, but I happen to think the media is playing this for all it can. Creating a world of hatred here. Everyone has a right to say what they want, in the forms of cartoons that I thought were humorous. However, knowing fully well how Muslims would react -defensively and then negatively and now outragiously, should have been expected.
There is no need to stir the pot here anymore than it’s already been stirred.
