Boston’s Black Rose

Posted by Raven on March 18th, 2006

One of the best pubs in Boston deserves this write up.

The first time I walked into the Black Rose Pub near Faneuil Hall, it was the late 1970s and there was a sign posted above the bar.

“Attention to Patrons,” it read. “We do not stock London gin, due to British oppression in Northern Ireland.”
Things have changed a lot since then, in Boston and in Northern Ireland.

“We’ve moved on,” says Paul Wilson, managing director of the Glynn Group, which owns the pub.
But on March 17 this is still an Irish town.

“Over the course of the weekend, we will go through 400 to 500 kegs at the Black Rose, and 1,000 cases of beer,” says Wilson.

And they’ll sell “1,000 pounds” of corned beef.

At 6 this morning the famous Irish pub opens its doors for its traditional St. Paddy’s day line-up: a full Irish breakfast, lots of Guinness and the Dropkick Murphys.

Last year there were more than 500 people in line when they opened the doors. The first were so eager they were setting up camp as the managers were kicking out, at 2 a.m., the last drinkers from the night before.

Don’t ask for green beer. They don’t serve it. Guinness is their best seller, today and year-round.

Wilson’s company runs seven bars in the Boston area, including the Black Rose and the nearby Purple Shamrock.
And they’re hoping for record sales this year.
The festival is still recovering from a slowdown seen in the two years after 9/11.

And business tends to be much better when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Thursday or a Friday, Wilson says. People can get a good start on a lost weekend.
“It’s a three-day affair,” he says. Forget lost productivity today. Expect lots of people to call in sick on Monday.

I wish I wasn’t working this weekend cause this is where I would be. It’s a great place and lots of fun…heh I was one of those people who got kicked out at 2am and, set up a “camp” to get in first thing in the ams.
