Tall Ship Barque Eagle

Posted by Raven on August 2nd, 2006

Another tall ship is coming to Portsmouth Harbor.

PORTSMOUTH — The official tall ship of America — The U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle — will sail into the Port City for a visit this Friday, all part of a three-day stopover complete with public tours, a welcoming ceremony and crew reception.

The vessel, which is used as a training vessel for the Coast Guard, is nearly 300 feet long. It carries 23 sails totaling 22,000 square feet of canvas. There is five miles of rigging and more than 200 individually named lines to control the vessel.

It will be open for tours at the port terminal on Market Street in Portsmouth below the Route 1 Bypass bridge. Hours are Friday and Sunday from 1-8 p.m. and Saturday from 1-6 p.m. Admission is free. There is also free parking at Albacore Park and the Bethel Assembly of God Church. Since there is a limit to how many visitors may board the ship at a time, visitors may receive a pass to tour the ship at a later hour.

The ship is indicative of the quality training Coastie cadets get. New Ensigns go on board ship knowing the rudiments of maritime navigation with hands-on experience, working in the ratlines and “driving” under sail. Such experience renders working on a modern, high tech equipped vessel a piece-of-cake by comparison.
