He is very fragile.

Make my heart bleed?? No.

Federal agents who hunt for illegal immigrants have a policy against arresting those who voluntarily turn themselves in – as Eloina Meza discovered recently in Denver.

After hiding for 12 years, Meza mustered her courage and approached immigration agents at their offices – “I saw the security, the police, the cameras up around the room” – and tried to surrender.

Her son, Edgar, 8, a U.S. citizen who suffers from Down syndrome and heart trouble, needs her constantly. A single mother, Meza had grown increasingly worried that, if immigration agents were to catch her, she and Edgar could be separated.

Instead, she wanted to turn herself in and have a judge review her case so that she might stay legally in Denver with her son.

But immigration officials on Sept. 14 turned Meza and Edgar away.

Meza is using her son and his condition for her own selfish needs and wants. She made choices. She chose to illegally enter this country; she got pregnant and had a kid; she brought her own “plight” to herself. As do so many other illegals. They are first and foremost, lawbreakers. When they decide to “come clean” they are shocked that they might be held accountable for their poor choices.

Her son is an American citizen, so she will not be deported. Ever. This article doesn’t mention this anywhere.

Meza probably “is entitled” to stay in the country with her son under immigration-law provisions that grant legal status to people in the country illegally for more than 10 years who also can prove an exceptional humanitarian need, Deasy said, “but the enforcement priorities of the Department of Homeland Security do not appear to include enforcement activities that will benefit a deserving individual.”

U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo – a leading immigration hard-liner in Congress, which recently pushed through millions of dollars to toughen enforcement – also is incensed.

“Is a policeman going to say, ‘I’m sorry, I can’t take you in right now because I’ve got to direct traffic?”‘ asked Tancredo, a Littleton Republican.

“(ICE agents) have a responsibility to enforce the law,” he said. “… And they can’t use the old excuse about resources. They’ve gotten a lot more. What are they using that for? What do they need resources for if that person walked in? They don’t have to search for them.”

My question: Since it is known that turning yourself in to ICE doesn’t automatically mean deportation, why haven’t the millions of other illegals done this? What are the scared of?

Edgar was born May 22, 1998, at an Aurora hospital, where doctors warned that “he is very fragile.” In addition to Down syndrome, he has a congenital heart problem that required three open-heart surgeries to put in a prosthetic mitral valve and a pacemaker, according to medical records.

“He requires close supervision. His pacemaker needs to be checked monthly, and he needs to be monitored carefully due to the anticoagulants,” said a letter from Dr. Robert Wolfe at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. “Moving away from this center is potentially life-threatening for Edgar.”

Another factor compelling Meza to beg for legal residency: She hasn’t been able to work since 2001. After her stint with the Postal Service, she settled into a job at Pour la France cafe at Denver International Airport. But after the 9/11 attacks, airport supervisors checked workers’ Social Security numbers. She was found out.

Now, she relies on friends to get by. Medicaid pays Edgar’s medical bills.

Uh huh…the bull starts. Moving away from the area places the kid at risk? Down in Mexico City they have a couple really good hospitals with pacemaker center…this is all done over a phone, did you know– and these devices are common in Mexico. As are blood tests and monitoring. So drop the bullshit medical excuses and life and death scenes here…spina bifida isn’t a life threatening condition and the pacemaker will work no matter what. Essentially there really is no need to monitor it. Mom and son would do fine back home in Mexico.

She relies on friends? How nice of them. And No, make no mistake about it. Medicaid doesn’t pay his bills. YOU DO. And so long as you’re willing to keep paying the tab here, know that his mother adds nothing back to the Medicaid funds- she pays 0 into the system. Her son is sucking up resources that could be and should be going to those who at least pay back something. Tough stance? Yes. Do I have compassion for her kid? Yes- but I draw the line when people use these kids to make hearts bleed. I draw the line when these kids could receive the same exact care in their homeland- but their parent choses the other path.

    You should take the time to learn the facts before trashing this poor woman and her son. Edgar has congenital heart disease, and has had THREE open heart surgeries. His physicians have said that Edgar cannot leave the vicinity of DENVER, much less the country. This child is in the hospital quite frequently, oftentimes being rushed to emergency. He cannot even travel on a plane. Edgar is not a citizen of Mexico, so he would not qualify for any kind of publicly-funded medical care there. Edgar is a United States citizen, and therefore THIS is his homeland. This great, civilized country has realized that we take care of our own, so those unable to afford medical care in this country, and who are suffering extreme disabilities, are entitled to Medicare. He is a United States ciizen because, like you, he was lucky enough to have been born in this country. Yes, his mother came from womewhere else, but so did your ancestors. You have no more right to be here than she does. When she was working in the US, she paid taxes, but did not get to file a return – she didn’t get her tax refund back. Therefore, she, like all working undocumented immigrants in this country whose taxes are withdrawn from paychecks, have paid a much higher percentage of their incomes to the IRS than any of us citizens do. Eloina would love to go back to her country and leave behind the days of looking over her shoulder for ICE (that’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement), but unfortunately her son’s condition keeps her here. Compassion is what makes us a civilized country. If you don’t like it, you should go live in the Middle East.

    Edgar should not even be considered a citizen, and according to the Constitution, he isn’t. Only an incorrect interpretation by our supreme rulers has made him a citizen.

    And what, exactly, is your complaint? We’re paying all his medical bills against our will. And his mom can get free housing, free medicine, free food, and free education — all paid for by me (even if it is completely against my will). What the hell more do you want us to do? You want the damn shirt off my back, too? Come and try and get it, you damn ingrate.

    Wow! You are so adverse to checking facts that you can’t even take a quick review of the Constitution to see that it says right there in the Fourteenth Amendment that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” No Supreme Court interpretation needed there. It’s very simple and clear that everyone born here is a citizen. Another area where you need to check your facts – Eloina (the mother) does NOT get any kind of assistance from the governement. She certainly does not get housing, nor does Edgar. She does not get food, clothing or anything else. I have to laugh, wondering where you get all this misinformation. But I have to sigh thinking of how you continue to spread this propaganda, based on little more than hate and fear of those different than you. It is certainly not based on real facts, knowledge, or even an attempt to learn the truth.

    Patrick my heart doesn’t bleed over this. I work with this stuff everyday so the bullshit can stop now. OF COURSE this parasite is going to get a doctor to claim her son CANNOT, just CANNOT leave the city! Funny how millions of others with the same dang diseases manage to get about! I work with kids who have spina bifida and the typical heart “conidtions” that come with it.
    The parasite is full of shit. So are the people reporting this story. And yes…so is the doctor who “certifies” this crap. OH WAIT. I haven’t seen any written certifications from a doctor about this.
    Hmm…they could put it up so people like me could verify this. They don’t because they know they will be fisked alive.

    Who said anything about spina bifida?? Edgar has complex congenital heart disease. The letter quoted from his doctor in the newspaper was written in August of this year, and certainly not for purposes of the newspaper article. Again, you idiot, before you start saying silly things you know nothing about, how about verifying facts? Try calling that doctor and seeing what he says.

    Another thing: this doctor has been Edgar’s treating physician since birth. He was not paid anything to write that, and has no reason to lie whatsoever. So, once again, you don’t know what you’re talking about. You can stop being afraid of those whose skin are a different color than yours, whose culture you don’t understand. They mean you no harm; they just want to live in peace, raise their children, and work. Traditionally peple like you, who are so full of hatred, become that way out of fear. Remember what FDR said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
