Muslim Sit Com

Posted by Raven on January 2nd, 2007

I guess it could make for good entertainment.

TORONTO
The bearded imam in traditional robes is railing against pop-culture idols, warning Muslims to protect themselves from the evil influences of prime time.

” ‘American Idol,’ ‘Canadian Idol,’ I say all idols should be smashed,” Baber tells a small congregation sitting on the floor of a makeshift mosque. ” ‘Desperate Housewives?’ Why should they be desperate when they’re only performing their natural womanly duties?”

Rayyan, a gorgeous young woman in a head scarf, looks bemused then whispers to her mother: “Hey, did you tape last night’s episode?”

The scene is from the first episode of the CBC comedy “Little Mosque on the Prairie.” (It airs Jan. 9 in Canada. Only some Americans in border states will be able to view it.)

The producers hope the topical humor about Islam and Christianity — with a backdrop of bumbling buffoons and everyday cross-purposes — will be as funny as it is fresh.

Why isn’t it going to be shown in the US? What’s the problem with it? Many Americans won’t find this humorous at all…in fact it would probably cause a stir the likes we haven’t seen in a long time.

It may not be about September 11, but it often feels like it. In the first episode, a handsome young Muslim man is being dragged by police from an airport line after he barks into his mobile phone: “If dad thinks that’s suicide, so be it. This is Allah’s plan for me.”

He is talking about his decision to leave his father’s Toronto law firm and become the spiritual leader of the small Muslim community in the fictitious prairie town of Mercy.

Another scene has a character named Joe stumbling upon the new makeshift mosque housed in the parish hall of an Anglican church, then rushing out to call the “terrorist attack hot line” when he sees the Muslims bowing to pray, “just like on CNN.”

Nope. It wouldn’t fly in the states.

While Miss Nawaz and the executive producers don’t want the show to be pegged as a Muslim comedy, they believe the time is right for TV to tackle the treatment of 800,000 Muslims in Canada and some 6 million in the United States since the terrorist attacks of 2001.

Maybe the victims of the cruel religion of Islam are ready to see some humor. Maybe the victims have forgotten. In the US, liberal people would laugh and see the innocent fun in such shows. But for those of us who see Islam as a threat to modern society, nothing they produce is ever funny. Muslims have a lot of work to do to counter the image so many of us have of them. I consider them all to be dishonest at the very least; those who come to my country to seek a better life, to get away from the brutality of their homeland are welcome. The rest, who come here to infiltrate our way of life, to soften us up and who are in the process of “sensitizing” us to their religion are a threat to me. No sit com will change my mind.

The whole idea is to show that “they’re just like you and me! Same problems, same attitudes, just a different location. Don’t be afraid of moslems, silly!”

    Just what we need. NOT!

  2. Raven Says:

Totally agree Ranten. I doubt this will be a success even in liberal Canada.

  3. Nick Says:

    Because muslims aren’t people, right?

Cruel religion of Islam? What about the cruel religion of Christianity {anyone remember the crusades)? Watch the documentary “National Treasures.” Available at netflix) America incorperated occult themes into it’s buildings, statues of Goddesses etc. with no mention or even whisper of Jesus. Futhermore I can’t believe the American sheep think the Republican’s war profiteering is just fine (Halliburton or Caryle group anyone.) America is filled with sheep that backed a war that has made more terrorists that there every would have been. I cannot believe people back someone like Bush whose fortune started when his grandfather made his first million by supporting Hitler. I cannot believe people say Reagan was a great president when he literally gave Saddam tons of anthrax and other munitions, not to mention in his administation they sent back to the US tons of cocaine to be sold in the US to fund the Contras. Read a book such as “Whiteout- the history of the CIA. Any way get informed if your a non-thinking sheep who knows none of these truths about your Country. Wake up to reality! Does anyone know we use weapons that fire depleted uranium into Iraq and there are 100,000 tons of radioactive wastes there causing bith defects and ruining the whole Country? How many innocents has this illegal war killed (both American soldiers and Iraqi civilians)? How much money has Bush and his associates made off of it? How many more terrorists have joined up after there kids and families were killed by America. It’s sad but we must face the truth of what our leaders do.

  8. Brad Says:

I meant firing depleted uranium into IRAN and the Iranian civilians. I have Iraq on my mind a lot because even though the Iraqi leader has little power (the religious Mullas are in control.) We’re dealing with that insanity now with our army in Vietman umm I mean Iraq.
