I have a 7 year old daughter who is almost identical to Ashley. Thank you for this article. You've hit the nail on the head. Every Dr. I've mentioned this treatment to,as an option for my growing daughter, looks at me in disgust. They have no clue. no one has a clue unless they've lived it.

I believe the parents had every right to make this decision. Ashley will always be a little girl and reproductive rights is not the issue here. She will never marry, never desire a family, so why would preserving her reproductive rights even be at issue. Her parents did what was necessary to keep her home with her family and to spare her the trauma of menstruation and all that goes with it. And for some there is more than discomfort to deal with. Her parents have also prevented her from ever suffering from any type of uterine or ovarian cancer. To the parents - take care of your child and love her as long as you can. Don't bother with what anyone else has to say.

To the person who suggested birth control they have obviously never been on it. 1. You can still get cramps 2. You still have breast discomfort 3. You can even have morning sickness symptoms 4. Um you still have a period

This issue is fraught with difficulties.
I applaud the parents for having the forsight to do this - as said before many parents are unawares and unprepared for what may happen.
As some have pointed out before, it seems to be alright for Ashley, but not for everycase. My issue is - where do we draw the line? And which disabilities will be considered and which will be disregarded?

Sorry Raven...but euthanizing people is allowed only in netherlands. I any other country of the EU it is allowed to euthanize people. If mothers in pregnancy know that the`ll get a disabled child, until the 6th/7th month( it dependsfrom state to state) they can decide to don`t get the baby (i dont know the right word for it).
To get euhanized is not that easy...you`ve to be clinically dead or you`ve to fix it in a special document which allows the doctors to turn off the machines if you`re suffering from deseases from i.e. lung cancer or other irreparable diseases

sorry, raven but you`re informed in wrong way...

Euthanasie is legal only in netherlands as far as I know. And also there you can euthanazise people which are clinically death.

If mohers in pregnancy know that they`ll born a disabled child, until the 6 month (it depends from state to state) they can decide if they want to get the child.
