Can’t otherwise afford to skip work

Posted by Raven on January 25th, 2007

The Socialist Semi State of San Fransisco Cali has some wonderful news of you’re a business owner: Pay your employees for time they don’t work. Period. They don’t have to have a need for a day off either. Just pay them.

For many workers calling in sick means more than spending the day in bed, it also means not getting paid … unless you live in San Francisco.

Employers in the City by the Bay must now give paid sick leave to all their workers — even, in some cases, when they’re not sick. One provision of the law allows workers without families to call in sick to care for a friend or neighbor — all on the boss’ dime.

Voters overwhelmingly approved the measure, which is the first law of its kind in the country. It mandates sick pay for everyone from full-time cab drivers to part-time nannies. The law provides up to 9 paid sick days a year to an estimated 115,000 workers, including low-wage earners who, according to labor activists, can’t otherwise afford to skip work.

Sweet. Imagine how this pans out at a local McD’s…kid calls out sick and MUST be paid now. Manager has to call another kid in to cover for the call out. Cost: Two shifts of pay for the work of one! Socialism. Never. Works. People. Lose. Jobs. Economies. Lose. Power.

Cost of Big Mac: 10.00
Fries: 7.00

I have no problems with companies that wish to offer their employees paid days off- for whatever reason. Sick time. Well time. Just time. It’s a benefit, a perk, that businesses can offer to attract good candidates for job openings. Like health insurance and stock options and discount plans to wellness centers and other similar benefits, these things help US decide what company is worth working for…along with salary, WE make informed choices here. Since when is it the responsibility of a city government to mandate what benefits those businesses within the city boundaries offer? I guess since now. It’s only 9 days a year for each employee? Add up the costs of that, especially in those industries where employees have to be replaced when they miss those days…this is outrageous. What will come of this? People will lose out. Because businesses will stay clear of good old San Fransisco and go to the next city over. Where there are no stupid mandates like this. People will go where the work is…SF will lose revenue from taxes. No one wins here. GOOD JOB SF!

Dumb asses!

Hmm… there might be some interesting public-health value in this law though. Illness can be quite contagious – without paid sick time, many workers would have to work anyway, and thus spread their illness further.

Public Health?? Gimme a break SR. 9 days is not going to do much for this. Most people will go to work sick anyway– and save the paid days off for the times they’re feeling REALLY good and it’s hot and sunny out!

Why only 9 days? Why not 365?

Enjoy the 9 days paid vacation kids.
