Taking Advantage of Mentally Ill: The Swiss

Posted by Raven on February 3rd, 2007

The Eurotards are up at it again. This time, taking advantage of the mentally ill by giving them “access” to assisted suicide.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland: A ruling by Switzerland’s highest court has opened the possibility that people with serious mental illnesses could be helped by doctors to take their own lives.

It makes me SICK. People with mental illness are SO very vulnerable; they are mentally fragile and in need of help, not death. Most mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances which can and are treated with medications. To even suggest that these people use doctors to help them die, is criminal.

“It must be recognized that an incurable, permanent, serious mental disorder can cause similar suffering as a physical (disorder), making life appear unbearable to the patient in the long term,” the ruling says.

It goes on to state that “if the death wish is based on an autonomous decision which takes all circumstances into account, then a mentally ill person can be prescribed sodium-pentobarbital and thereby assisted in suicide.”

Various organizations exist in Switzerland to help people who want to commit suicide, and assisting someone to die is not punishable under Swiss law as long as there is no “selfish motivation” for doing so.

What is a “incurable, permanent, serious mental disorder”? That cannot be treated? Who is going to determine what specific mental illness’s fall under this bulloney?? And who is going to certify that a person with THIS serious a disorder is able to make sound, reasonable choices?

The judges made it clear in their ruling that certain conditions would have to be met before a mentally ill person’s request for suicide assistance could be considered justified.

“A distinction has to be made between a death wish which is an expression of a curable, psychiatric disorder and which requires treatment, and (a death wish) which is based on a person of sound judgment’s own well-considered and permanent decision, which must be respected,” they said.

Oh I feel better now. NOT. The very nature of many mental illnesses often includes suicidal ambition and thought. Every mental health professional knows this. Sorting out what is delusion vs. what is a real wish would be practically impossible.

The case was brought by a 53-year old man with serious bipolar affective disorder, who asked the tribunal to allow him to acquire a lethal dose of pentobarbital without a doctor’s prescription.

The tribunal ruled against his request, confirming the need for a thorough medical assessment of the patient’s condition, which a prescription would confirm.

Whether any Swiss physician would be prepared to prescribe a lethal dose of pentobarbital to a mentally ill person remains unclear. The country’s national ethics commission could not be reached for comment late on Friday.

Bi Polar disorder. It’s nasty. And very common. And very expensive to treat- the medications alone cost a small fortune. I hate to mention this but I think it’s what this is all about. These countries that have socialized health care are looking at ways to keep costs down…and legally killing off entire groups of disadvantaged people is one way to do it. I really hope the doctors reject this nonsense. If they don’t, humanity loses out big time. The Culture of Death is spreading even further down a unethical road.

If folks really want to commit suicide, they will. ‘Assisted suicide’ in my opinion is just another form of euthanasia.
I was engaged to a bi-polar who committed suicide. :( She was a very creative artist, but wouldn’t stay on her medication; she said that the drugs interfered with her art. I have not met any bi-polars that weren’t creative, it’s almost like the mental disease appears when someone is creative past a certain point. All arguments about ethics aside, a society that legalizes killing off their most creative people isn’t going to do well.
Perhaps the Swiss judges should think about that, since they obviously don’t take humanity and ethics into consideration.

Apparently, this is what the Democrats mean by “those enlightened Europeans.”

Me, I’ll stick by us neanderthal Southern neocons for true compassion of human life.

PS: is this a new theme, or the old gun girl? Either way, looks fantastic.

  3. Raven Says:

tweel- very good point and very true. Assisting people to kill themselves is wrong no matter what the excuse; every life has value. Sometimes that value must be fought for; sometimes we have to look beyond our own ideas of quality, value, and such. Every human being bring a gift to this world as people should look for the gifts vs. the disease or it’s costs.

  4. Raven Says:

Yep Teach this is the new theme, the gun girl was part of my original theme way back 3 yrs. ago.

  5. GM Says:

Raven, you are spot on with this post. As a mental health professional, virtually all the mentally ill can be helped somehow. To say that someone who is severly mentally ill, which implies being totally irrational, can make a rational decision to kill themselves, is irrational. If one is rational, they don’t need a doc to do them in, that is only societies way of covering up messy suicides. “Yeppers Dective, we have a nice neat body over here.”

  6. GM Says:

Duh… that should read detective… sigh, I think I need to go back to bed.

  7. GM Says:

And I LOVE the old/new skin… delightful and Sassy!

  8. Raven Says:

Gotcha GM- thanks for the compliment on the new design.

I was appalled when I read this article. I believe these countries are taking advantage of people who have little control over their illnesses, and mental illness is indeed a disease that can be treated. Sure there are a few DX which are difficult; does this mean we offer suicide as a treatment? Does it mean we take the word of those who would otherwise not ask for such things? Of all people, those with mental illness are perhaps the most vulnerable.

  9. Cao Says:

They killed people in mental hospitals in nazi germany as part of creating the ‘master race’. It wasn’t only Christians an Jews, it was people who couldn’t take care of themselves, or were seen as a burden on society. This chills me to the core.

I also like the new design, Raven, I like how it’s laid out, and how it looks when you open up a post to comment, even the comment box!

  10. Raven Says:

True with the history Cao. Funny these leftist foreign freaks don’t see the connection to what they call modern medical advances and patient rights to Nazi death camps. This stuff is slowly arriving in the US too- the cloud of the Death Culture.

About this design: It’s all because of YOU Cao :)

When I went to your site several weeks ago and saw that Hard Nosed Cao skin it brought me back to my original skin!! So I contacted Lisa to see if she could bring gun girl back to life and this is the result.

    Thank You!
