It wasn't only Christians an Jews, it was people who couldn't take care of themselves, or were seen as a burden on society. This chills me to the core. I was appalled when I read this article. I believe these countries are taking advantage of people who have little control over their illnesses, and mental illness is indeed a disease that can be treated. Sure there are a few DX which are difficult; does this mean we offer suicide as a treatment? Does it mean we take the word of those who would otherwise not ask for such things? As a mental health professional, virtually all the mentally ill can be helped somehow. To say that someone who is severly mentally ill, which implies being totally irrational, can make a rational decision to kill themselves, is irrational. If one is rational, they don't need a doc to do them in, that is only societies way of covering up messy suicides. "Yeppers Dective, we have a nice neat body over here." Sometimes that value must be fought for; sometimes we have to look beyond our own ideas of quality, value, and such.
