Honey, you don’t look like the girl in the movie

Posted by Raven on March 6th, 2007

For centuries women have subjected themselves to treatments and surgical alterations to their bodies in an effort to appeal to men. Face lifts, neck lifts, tummy tucks, breast augmentation and liposuction are now everyday surgeries for a growing number of women…and so are surgeries designed to alter the appearance of women’s private parts.

Christopher A. Warner says he considers himself something of a maverick, a caring physician willing to challenge medical orthodoxy in order to help women.

That’s why the 39-year-old board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist recently opened the Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Institute of Washington in a red brick townhouse off Washington Circle. There, he is building a business as the first area physician to perform controversial procedures that use a laser to enhance sexual gratification by repairing tissue damaged by childbirth, to give women a “youthful aesthetic look” or to make those who are not appear to be virgins.

Tissue damaged by childbirth? To the very area of a woman’s body designed for this very purpose? Remember that. This isn’t about rips and tears which heal themselves…this is all about looks and nothing else. The inner parts of the vagina are rarely damaged during the birthing process and the fallacy of repairing this area is false…the vagina is able to restore itself to it’s pre childbirth condition quite well on it’s own.

The proliferation of such surgeries, fueled in part by the growing popularity of cosmetic surgery and of reality television makeover shows such as the E! network’s “Dr. 90210,” alarms critics, who say there is no evidence they are safe or effective, because they have never been studied scientifically. Some say the procedures foster — or create — insecurity while doing little to treat the underlying causes of female sexual dissatisfaction.

I think these shows do cause girls and women to feel insecure..after all they are comparing themselves to those who have many procedures and surgeries to look “perfect”…Too many women confuse their ability to enjoy sex with their looks- and for these women, sex is not about what feels good.

Who is the Maverick Vagina Doctor?

Warner said he spent $80,000 on a medical laser and training courses given by Matlock, a regular on “Dr. 90210″ who tightly controls the dissemination of the procedures through licenses and through trademarks for their names such as “Designer Laser Vaginoplasty.” Warner said he has conferred frequently with Matlock in setting up his laser practice, which is expected to move into bigger quarters in the spring. Warner says calls to his practice increase dramatically after each of Matlock’s television appearances.

Matlock is himself a controversial figure. He has been disciplined by the Medical Board of California for what he says is a “misunderstanding” with racial overtones and sued for malpractice 10 times in the past decade for what he characterizes as “nuisance cases.”

He’s a sham doctor who is using this show to increase the sale of his product. He’s franchising his trademark business.
ANY woman who chooses to use the services of a doctor who has been disciplined AND sued (10 times!!) is absolutely crazy. And she is putting her life at risk. I guess there are lots of crazy women out there…who want the designer vagina more than anything else. How stupid of them.

One of the most vociferous critics is Thomas G. Stovall, a past president of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons. “There is absolutely zero scientific literature that supports . . . the notion that firing a laser of any kind will tighten [vaginal] muscles,” said Stovall, who calls the surgery “a ripoff.”

“Most sexual gratification has nothing to do with your vaginal muscle tone,” said Stovall, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. “It’s really a heresy promoting this. But sex sells.”

Lasers cannot tighten muscles. THAT is a medical fact. Lasers CAN alter the surface of tissues- removing scars and veins and little bumps and what not. We see how lasers make the skin look polished and smooth- and this is about the extent of what it can do. To claim that vaginal muscles can be “tightened” with this is unethical. There is a surgery that DOES alter and tighten muscles in this area and it’s similar to a tummy tuck, and extremely risky for women. It is never done for sexual enhancement. This surgery is done for women who have had prolapsed vaginas and bladders, which is often caused by a high intensity accident or other trauma. Very very rarely does childbirth have ANYTHING to do with this.

Each laser procedure costs about $3,000 to $9,000, and many women undergo several simultaneously. These surgeries are also often performed with other cosmetic surgeries, such as liposuction. They are rarely covered by insurance.

Lots of money to be made here…women can drop by in the morning, go under the knives and lasers, pay upwards of $20,000 and go home looking refreshed and anew…but there are risks.

Operating on or near sensitive vaginal tissue, Young added, is inherently risky and can cause scarring, nerve damage and decreased sensation.

“The question I have is, is this being done for the benefit of the woman — or someone else?” Young asked. Some women undergo the surgery, he said, because a man has told them, “Honey, you don’t look like the girl in the movie.”

And Nawal Nour, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Harvard Medical School, is no fan of what she calls “designer vaginas.”

Much of this has little to do with the men in the lives of these women…although I am sure that there are some who make comments and complain. These men are the porn dependent types who can never be satisfied with a real woman. The impetus for these surgeries comes from women themselves, who are competing for men and who compete with one another over their looks. Women with little self confidence.

“Every single one of these procedures was developed” at the request of women, Matlock said. “All these patients have gynecologists. Why are they coming to me?”

Warner, who has operated on 18 patients, said he does not consider the lack of published studies to be problematic.

“Life isn’t all about studies,” Warner said. “These are real problems that don’t require 50 people to research the same topic. Women are telling us that it’s working.” He said the laser surgery he performs can also fix stress urinary incontinence, leakage of urine that sometimes occurs after childbirth.

In Berman’s view, much of the demand is fueled by ignorance or desperation.

Most women, she said, have no concept of what is normal when it comes to genital appearance or functioning. “We are particularly vulnerable to believing there is something wrong,” especially if a partner says something negative, she said. She added that many women do not realize that incontinence often can be successfully treated with far less invasive methods such as exercises, biofeedback and medication.

Warner is an idiOt..of course women go to him…because he markets himself on TV programs. He feeds the insecurity of those who watch these shows and he’s making a lot of money doing little to really address the needs to these women. I liken this to the bandaid approach. Cover up the cuts and ignore what caused it. Using incontinence as a reason for laser surgery is totally inappropriate because lasers cannot repair this problem.

Warner and Matlock say that patients frequently request “a nice sleek look” similar to images seen in Playboy magazine and on some cable TV channels. “Women tell us they want to look like they’re 18 again,” Matlock said.

The dirty little secrets should be revealed. Nearly every Playboy bunny, model and female porn star have had their vulva’s surgically altered to LOOK pleasing, to look as if it belonged to a 12 year old girl-not even an 18 yr old. These surgeries are a pre-req, a requirement, to have done before ANY photo shots are ever done. Women need to know they can never LOOK like these fake stars- who have this “advantage” of working in careers that demand the industries own “perfect” look…and it’s based on nothing that is real and honest and natural.

Some women, including 32-year-old Lisseth Figueroa, an office manager in Los Angeles, say rejuvenation surgery helped rescue a foundering marriage.

Figueroa said she suffered from stress incontinence after four pregnancies and felt she was being rejected sexually. Two years ago, after hearing a friend extol the virtues of surgery, she borrowed from her mother and her boss to help pay Matlock’s $15,000 fee; her husband gave her $8,000.

“I did it for both of us,” said Figueroa, adding that their marriage has improved as a result of laser rejuvenation and a procedure she said Matlock suggested to beautify her genitals. “Before the surgery I felt really old . . . and ugly. Since the surgery that’s changed. I’m very happy with it — and so is my husband.”

You know…how many men would have their penises surgically reshaped and altered because a woman told them it looks UGLY?
That it’s not perfect. It’s not big enough. It’s not thick enough. It looks too droopy when not erected. Haven’t you heard about the penis lift???

How come yours doesn’t look like HIS (the porn star)??

How come your testicles hang so low? Get them tightened up honey…I don’t care if it will effect YOUR ability to enjoy sex.

Don’t think men are immune to hurt feelings and insecurities over their private parts either.

Beautify her genitals…FUCK that bulloney. If a man rejected me over this, he would be OUT the damn door faster than I can type this sentence. A man who makes comments isn’t a man. He’s a BOY who needs to grow up and mature a little bit. And he’s not worth his weight in pennies.

I feel bad for women who have such low self esteem that they subject themselves to these surgeries. Once you have ONE, you become dependent upon them…it is worse than an addiction. The effects of these operations don’t last long and women will go in for repeats many times…to keep up with the look and feel of it all. They will risk their ability to enjoy sex over a surgical procedure that can destroy that physical ability. And they won’t care…because to them, LOOKS are everything. How sexy it that?

    Shame on you, Beth.

Pron has absolutely no effect on modern culture whatsoever. All of these things are happening in a complete vaccuum. Women just dream these things up to please… ummm… other women (who apparently sit around staring at each other’s vaginas all day because they have nothing better to do before dashing off to the surgeon to have bits of themselves sliced off).

I read something really interesting a few weeks ago.

Two groups of men were asked to rate their own attractiveness. One was shown photos of attractive men beforehand. Surprise, surprise… that group rated themselves far lower than the control group.

Same experiment on women. The women were far less affected, but uniformly rated themselves lower than others rated them. Researchers speculated the women were so used to being surrounded by images of younger, attractive supermodels that seeing more didn’t have much of an impact, whereas for men this was something they hadn’t had to contend with as often and when they did, it negatively impacted their self-image.

Me me me society. You can market anything that someone thinks will improve them…and idiots will buy into it. I for one watch 90210 just for yucks. I am amazed at the shallowness of some people. After giving birth, there isn’t nothing else you need to fix down there!

Hmmm. I was trying to come up with something funny and witty to say… but I got nothing… except that snake oil salesmen always find some part of people’s vanity in order to make some $$$…

  6. Beth Says:

And you know what? I can’t imagine there being any men who really CARE about their girlfriends/wives looking like pr0n skanks. They’re just happy to have a vagina around that’s willing and able. ;-)

    Stupid women girls.

HA! I know, of course! My neighbors and I were just inspecting each others’ vaginas the other day, deciding whose was purtiest! (I won, of course–those other bitches went and made laser appointments immediately! Nyah nyah, weird-snatched women!)

That too… but you hafta admit, there ain’t nothing purtier than a purty vagina…. wtf? I much more of a butt and breasts man myself… if you are going to spend $9000 to fix something, then focus on that, cuz I don’t spend alotta time down under if you get my drift….

  11. Raven Says:

Heh…at least mine is purty AND real AND it’s capable of FEELING all the good things life can give it.
Be a cold damn day in hell that I have ANY kind of plastic/rejuvenating surgery on ANY part of my body.
    I LIKE REAL.
    REAL ROCKS.

To them, lemme be a surgeon…heh…I can use a knife and a blow torch and hammer and other tools of the trade…lemme reconstruct these men’s privates.

HA!!!! And yeah, you’re definitely right that some men sleazebags would definitely do that. Probably some who could use at least as much “enhancement” themselves.
    ;-)

    Female genital mutilation, American-style

  15. civil truth Says:

Let me see if I got this right – no quantifiable clinical indications, no quantifiable clinical endpoints, no measurement of efficacy, no recording of adverse effects, no clinical trials – surely something no IRB would touch with a 6-inch pole…

Going on – proprietary techniques that therefore cannot be reproduced by neutral parties, procedures promoted by unprofessional advertising…So why are these guys (and I assume it’s men behind this) still in practice. Why haven’t the state boards pulled their licenses? Why haven’t their malpractice carriers pulled their coverage?

Or even better, why haven’t they been vounteered to serve as the test subjects for the revolutionary sex-enhancement laser surgery first demonstrated in the movie Goldfingers (1964).

As for the women seduced to undergo this appalling masquerade of surgery…I’m feel such sorrow that they’ve deluded themselves into believing they need to improve on their womanhood – and digust at the bloodsuckers who promote this delusion just to…as the rugby song goes, My God how the money rolls in.

Just another example of the ongoing transformation of health into a consumer product leeching off the manufacturing of phony needs.

  16. baley Says:

Ah… Men’s genitals ARE ugly! I don’t think stitching, tucking or stuffing will improve that appearance.

From this man’s POV – real women rock! Tummys, streach marks the natural “sag” of a woman’s breast……. altered women look and act fake – not attractive in any way.

    Just sayin

PS – I’d like to be a fly on the wall when Beth and her neighbors are inspecting their ….. Ah never mind.

  17. Raven Says:

CT- I suspect the good doctor has ruined some women’s personal sex lives…but the women WILL NOT admit this because they did this for someone else who is VERY HAPPY with the appearance factor here. So I doubt there will be any lawsuits right away.
Sham doctors work without malpractice insurance…it’s not required. Is this risky? Yes…BUT these docs have set up their shop in locations that are easy to run away from in a moments notice…NOT one has an office located near a hospital or clinic for that matter. And I guarantee you not a one has admission privies either…to me, this is a RED FLAG. BIG ONE.

As for license issues, it takes a VERY serious infraction to pull one from an MD. The repeated pattern of deaths is an example…or being a drug addict. Or similar things. These sham MD’s are real doctors who are capitalizing on a non need that they have created…it’s a dream business really. These places can shut down overnight. And the docs can move to another city in the same state or another state without any questions. The current system for monitoring the work of doctors who chose to operate under the radar enables them to do this.

  18. Raven Says:

baley I don’t think men’s genitals are ugly. If I did I wouldn’t like men. Actually they do have places out in Cali and down in Brazil that offer plastic surgery for men. Yes. They can thicken…they can add…umm length but the addition will have no nerves and therefore no feeling. We’ve all heard of the balloon inserts operated by a pump…LOL, and the disaster this can turn into. Also they can repair the percieved ugliness of other parts of the male anatomy using cuts, nips and inserting of plastic molded pieces that are made specially for each patient. And yes…there is such a thing a a testicle tightening operation. They’re trimmed of excess tissue and stitched up to the groin for a nice pleasing appearance.

Gay men go for these surgeries mostly. Although recently there have been non gay, younger late 20 something men who travel to SA to be enhanced after years of Viagra abuse…they no longer have the ability to get an erection and the drug can no longer help them. Sadly the surgeries cannot help them either in performance issues, just looks. These men are useless, when it comes to sex. And it’s their own fault for using drugs-viagra types- for so many years. Many use this crap when they are 17, 18, 19- when they DON’T need it at ALL…but think somehow the drug helps them. Damn. Fools.

  19. Jerry K. Says:

Well the weed whacker treatment I received at that early age qualifies as mutilation as well. To make me look like Daddy. My sons got it too.

And it itches, all that air drying things out that were designed to be moist. Gotta make it moist again. What can I do?

Ain’t this fun? It feels better.

Oh for crying out loud. I am speechless. No I’m not. Too much money. Too much vanity. Too much stupidity. Too much narcissism. I’m going to show this to a blogging friend who’s a plastic surgeon and see what he says.

  22. Wearyman Says:

    Ugh.

Circumcision is so barbaric. It’s disgusting that we as a people still accept infant genital mutilation like that.

So yeah, you women haven’t exactly cornered the market on genital alteration. At least women get to make the decision as Adults and don’t have it forced on them as infants.

And just in case anyone accuses me of hypocricy, my son is a WHOLE man. No circumcision mutilation for MY boy. He’s gonna grow up with a proper, full sized and fully functional penis. Not something prematurely shortened and damaged due to some stupid backward and barbaric custom.

The same goes for this ridiculous vaginal mutilation surgery. Stupid and backwards.

  23. Kim Says:

The uncircumcised male penis is responsible for the spread of disease.
HIV, HPV and many other STD live in the folds, where it is dark, damp and a perfect medium for germs to grow. Medically speaking, men who have been circumcised have a much lower rate of penile cancer too. Medically speaking, all the cleaning in this world doesn’t mean it’s REALLY clean because germs are found there in large numbers after said cleaning.

Wearyman, you’re a little ignorant here.
The circumcision doesn’t alter the size, length or thickness of a penis. If anything, it allows the true size to be seen rather than hidden under a sheath of soft rubbery skin.

And speaking as a woman, the uncircumcised male penis is most certainly one of life’s most UGLY things to look at. Get it fixed.

  24. Wearyman Says:

Kim, you are the ignorant one.

It’s amazing that people still believe the Victorian age fantasies about the foreskin causing disease. Most of your post comes straight out of a Victorian moralist’s handbook. I suppose that you will next tell us that circumcision prevents excessive masturbating in males, and that masturbating will cause blindness?

If even a portion of what you say was true, then humanity would be extinct, as for most of our history we have been far dirtier and more disease-ridden than we are today. The foreskin serves to do the exact OPPOSITE of what you claim it does. It has several glands used to keep the head of the penis moist and dirt-free, and several thousand nerve endings in it. It is a fully functional and integrated part of the male sexual organ. Cutting it off is akin to cutting off the labia or clitoris in a girl, and just as barbaric.

But, just to completely stomp your ignorance into the ground, here’s some hard data for you:

The American Cancer Society, states in a letter to the AAP: “We would like to discourage the American Academy of Pediatrics from promoting routine circumcision as a preventive measure for penile or cervical cancer… Perpetuating the mistaken belief that circumcision prevents cancer is inappropriate.”

    Regarding HIV and circumcision: http://www.doctorsopposingcircumcision.org/info/HIVStatement.html

What the foreskin is really for: (content warning)
    http://www.nocirc.org/publish/pamphlet3.html

The male foreskin is a vital and important part of the penis. It is not a mere flap of skin to be discarded on a whim, and your ideas of genital beauty pretty much fall in line with the men who would have their wives undergo vaginal laser surgery. You ideas are just as backward as theirs and just as repugnant.

Time to do some learning and reading Kim.

  25. Kim Says:

Whats the matter Wearyone?? Offended that someone says you’re privates are ugly? They are if you’re not circumcised in my opinion. And in my opinion it does spread disease.

The links you dropped here are not medically endorsed and are from sites that promote your point. The American Academy of Pediatrics is against circumcision right now- they have gone back and forth on this for three decades.

I agree the actual procedure is BARBARIC. I wish and I KNOW there are kindler gentler ways to do this. It’s horrible to watch- I have four sons. I also work in nursing and have a little more knowledge than you think.

You’re the very ignorant one here too. Raven’s post was about women seeking to have their vagina’s “tightened” using unproven methods. The article has NOTHING to do with anything else. Raven mentioned that some men might ask their wives/GF’s to have their vulva’s surgerically altered to look more pleasing to them…and Raven compared this to women asking their husbands/BF’s to get male anatomy surgery to make their parts LOOK better. In her opinion and mine, it’s absurd.

Nothing to do with cleanliness issues, diseases and the like. A woman’s vulva is not a germ infested place, like the male penis can be if it is not circumcised. Sorry if this offends you and bothers you. Fact is fact.

    Source

LONDON (AP) – Circumcision may reduce men’s chances of contracting HIV by up to 60 percent – but early results suggest the procedure may put women at increased risk of infection, according to preliminary data presented Tuesday.

Early results announced at a U.N. consultation in Switzerland on the potential impact of male circumcision on AIDS in Africa suggested that if HIV-positive men do not abstain from sex while healing from circumcision surgery, their female partners might have a higher chance of catching HIV from them.

However, experts said the results were not conclusive – and highly susceptible to other factors, such as condom use – demonstrating the difficulties of utilizing circumcision in HIV prevention in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 60 percent of those with AIDS are women.

Previous studies have confirmed the dramatic impact circumcision has in cutting men’s HIV infection rates, but a big question has been the resulting effect on women.

There are thousands of medical sources which I don’t have time to look for now. It’s a personal choice Weary Man. No need to get yourself up worked into a flap of smelly skin over. No one is going to force you to part with that k?
