Cracking Down on Bullies

Now this is a joke.

BOSTON – Lawmakers decried school bullying on Tuesday as they considered legislation to prevent it, but others warned against unintentionally curbing free speech in the process.

Senators and representatives on the Joint Committee on Education listened to testimony on a half-dozen bills that variously aim to crack down on the physical, verbal and computer bullying that plagues many schools and playgrounds.

A dozen states across the country are considering similar measures.

“Bullying is a gateway for bullies to more dangerous behavior,” said Sen. Jarrett Barrios, D-Cambridge, co-sponsor of one bill.

School yard bullies have always been around. And they do effect the confidence of those who are subject to their antics. Bullies are often lonely kids (and grown ups) who have little confidence themselves. What defines bullying behavior? To me it means a few things but to someone else it means totally different things.

The bullies eventually move along in life. Those who are “victim” to being bullied are the ones who end up causing us trouble. One way or another, what goes around always comes around…I have found this to be true in every case. A bully always gets their day…and the victims always blame the bully for their future failures in life.

Should we attempt to legislate behavior though? I think not. Some blame must be shouldered on parents here. But MUCH more needs to go to society in general. When we have world leaders and national leaders calling each other names, using terms and language that are offensive, we once again reap what we sow…

I say follow that golden rule and much of this would not happen. Do onto others what would you want done to you. Sounds pretty simple. Until we get people who have different standards of what they would Do to themselves. Human beings are very different, by nature. Some of us are much tougher than others. A lot of this stems from how we were raised and the environment we live in.

Over in Great Britain they’re considering teaching their young some manners once again. It’s a start in the right direction. We can teach and we SHOULD model good behavior. But we cannot legislate it.

Bullying can be discouraged quite easily.

Too bad those with the power to do so couldn’t be bothered.
