Iran’s “New” Super Fighter….. (snicker)

Posted by Duncan on September 22nd, 2007

I saw this on the news yesterday. I almost spit out my Starbucks Tall Non-fat No-Whip Cafe Mocha. This is the latest and greatest feat of Iranian aeronautical engineering?

TEHRAN (AFP) — Iran unveiled on Thursday a new home-grown fighter jet amid growing tensions with the United States, saying the plane could “blind the eyes” of its enemies.

State television showed pictures of two “Saegheh” (Thunder) fighters — said by Iran to be similar to the American F-18 — taking off in tandem and then landing for a ceremony at Tehran’s Mehrabad airport.

“This fighter plane has been researched, designed and built with indigenous means and this new generation of fighter plane is entering industrial production,” Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.

Yep. Sounds like the Iranians will soon own the skies over any warzone with this beast. John over at OPFOR has this to say:

He went on to say that the Saegeh could defeat the F-18 in dogfights, out maneuver the F-22, and merge with other Saegehs to form Voltron.

So what’s with the stupid thunderbolt talk? Mostafa sounds like an Iroquois Medicine Man. No doubt the Saegeh’s radar will spot enemies with the eyes of hawk, and strike with the strength of bear. PR note to Tehran, if you’re going to show off your crappy new military equipment, leave the Dances with Wolves talk at home.

John also points out its similarities with the F-5 and that they simply added another vertical stabilizer and called it good.

Here is the F-5 and the T-38 Talon, an USAF training aircraft:

T-38 on the right side, with the very impressive USN F-18 to the left.

Iran’s new fighter resembles the T-38, an aircraft that has been around since the early 60s. Which makes me wonder, which aircraft is this new fighter more like… the old T-38, or the Hornet. Probably the former.

And here are two more photos of Iran’s new “super fighter”.

Iran’s Saegheh – Death Bringer to all Infidels

Sounds like some saber-rattling and posturing to me, trying to further puff up their chests and perhaps self-delude themselves into thinking that the Iranian Air Force would be more than a minor bump, similar to a small squirrel (and just as impressive), to the wonderfully trained and equipped USAF and USN. The F-22 is quite probably the most impressive fighter ever to be built. Its pilots are the best trained. The F-18 Super Hornet is the next best thing to the F-22. No way these boys can hang with the US.

F-22 Raptor – Death Bringer to Stupid Hajis…

The Iranian Air Force will not even get CLOSE to the F-22 to find out if it could hang in a dog fight. The F-22 will have shot them down long before the Iranian pilots knew they were going to be engaged.

F-18 Going Supersonic

And unfortunately for the Iranian thugs.. their IEDs won’t work in the air. Should we choose, we could own the airspace over Iran, bombing at will… And this new airplane would be either a smoking whole on the ramp.. or as Mike comments at OPFOR:

I hope those things are bio-degradeable because they’re gonna end up littering most of the persian countryside.

To believe anything else would take, to quote the junior senator from New York, a willing suspension of disbelief

Jihadi douchebags… that is what living in the 7th century gets ya… technological disadvantages….

    BWAH-HAH-HAH-HAH-HAAAA!!!!!!

    Oh my God . . . can’t stop laughing . . . “can out-fly an F-22″ oh GOD, I think I ruptured something laughing . . . . Hee-hee-hee-hee-hee!!!!

Assuming they can FIND IT ON RADAR . . .

    Assuming they can BEAT IT’S THRUST-TO-WEIGHT RATIO . . .

Assuming they can BEAT IT’S TIME TO ALTITUDE MARKS . . .

Assuming they can find enough suicidal pilots to go up against the U.S. Air Force.

    Heh-heh-heh.

I’ve been laughing about this for a while now ( http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e57/RanbaRal/stupid%20stuff/1965.jpg -poster I made about it last year).

Basically they took the F-5 chassis design we sold them in the 70’s and upped its size so it could carry two MiG-29 engines and put twin tails on it. Funny enough, that’s how we came up with the initial draft design of the YF-17 (now the F-18). If it is anything similar to the F-20 (upgraded F-5 that was never made) or YF-17 it should perform similar to an F-16A or F-18A. Just enough to be a minor threat, but still horrible enough to be totally spanked.

  3. Ranba Ral Says:

er, YF-17 based off our equivalent engines, of course.

I’m sure the Israeli airforce is shaking in their boots also! And liberals call George Bush cocky? Of course, these are the same people that believe 72 virgins await them in heaven.
