S CHIP Dynamics

As I type the House is going back and forth on the S CHIP expansion bill. President Bush has promised to veto this new and not improved version of the legislation.

President Bush has also said he would approve an increase of 20 billion over 5 years, vs. the 35 Billion proposed in the bill. No one can say he’s not willing to meet more than half way on this. No one is claiming that the current coverage should be taken away- as many on the left are trying to mislead us all to think. And I’m pretty sure most of us realize that the funding needs to increase to keep up with inflation…and add those children who are currently without coverage. The left will try to cloud this over and make me and others who think like me out to be the MEAN ones. Pfft to them.

Bush administration officials yesterday voiced conciliation, suggesting the president could accept legislation that would expand the program by about $20 billion over five years, far bigger than the $5 billion expansion that Bush initially proposed.

Robert Bluey has a list of 5 reasons this bill is not what the Democrats are claiming:

1) It still raises the general federal income eligibility for SCHIP to 300% of the federal poverty level (an increase from the current 200 % level).

2) It still covers adults, just in new ways either directly through Medicaid or through a new funding mechanism (that is more generous than Medicaid).

3) It still crowds-out private coverage. New Congressional Budget Office estimates show that more than 2 million kids would move from private coverage to government coverage.

4) It still expands the program to “new” populations. New CBO estimates show 1.1 million would be newly eligible.

5) It still waters down citizenship verification requirements made in the Deficit Reduction Act.

psychophil finds this gem:

This lady who appeared on Oprah lives the life of a big house in the burbs, new cars, six beautiful kids, and spending way beyond her husband’s $5,000/month salary. Felice drops $400 a month on Starbucks, $240 on tans and manicures, and her children have no health insurance.

Of course her family wouldn’t qualify for S CHIP because of the income…but there will be those who huff and puff that it is for the children and this family SHOULD be entitled to whatever welfare they can get.

And psychophil says this, to which I totally agree:

Obvious we all need to start taxing lower income smokers so we can provide this family with free health care for there kids. I mean its not their fault they don’t have health insurance. Well ok… yes it is, but neverming that! Its for the children! Think of the Chiiiilllllldddddrrrreeeeennnnn!!!!

The children. Of parents who make poor choices that should deem them ineligible for this coverage. But we won’t dare question the family finances now will we? We don’t want to make sure these funds are going to those who truly need it vs. those who are just too stuck in their own selfish sense of entitlement.

It’s a step towards socialism- the current S CHIP proposed by the Democrats. I pray it will be defeated, for the sake of America.

There are times when I wish that we could just do away with all the posturing and deception. Not only are the politicians dishonest, but the entire process as well.
