Ok for states & cities to determine local gun laws
Q: Is the D.C. law prohibiting ownership of handguns consistent with an individual’s right to bear arms?
A: As a general principle, I believe that the Constitution confers an individual right to bear arms. But just because you have an individual right does not mean that the state or local government can’t constrain the exercise of that right, in the same way that we have a right to private property but local governments can establish zoning ordinances that determine how you can use it.
Q: But do you still favor the registration & licensing of guns?
A: I think we can provide common-sense approaches to the issue of illegal guns that are ending up on the streets. We can make sure that criminals don’t have guns in their hands. We can make certain that those who are mentally deranged are not getting a hold of handguns. We can trace guns that have been used in crimes to unscrupulous gun dealers that may be selling to straw purchasers and dumping them on the streets.

I’m not surprised. Barack Obama is for change…. just not the change any conservative should be for, only if you value a mad dash towards the cliffs of socialism…
June 14th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Government is made of laws for the protection of the populace, not for the protection of the beliefs of a few. Our mad dash toward capitalism already put us over the cliff. See the violence in the marketplace and the desperate gun violence in the country. Thanks Ronald Regan! Rapacious unregulated greed is not sustainable.
June 14th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
But over-regulation kills business. Which is who employs us, pays us, benefits us. Greed? let’s talk about it:
Liberals who want to push state provided health care to families who CHOOSE not to spend their money wisely (SCHIP)- they who could purchase health insurance and who earn respectable incomes; but no, the big house and SUV and Internet and fancy gadgets take precedent over insurances.
Liberals who reject drilling within the borders because they don’t want to mess their back yards;
Liberals who wish to sell America’s working soul to the UN via allowing them to tax us even more for the better global community (when said UN cannot even manage it’s own Food Relief Programs)
Guns? That’s a small thing really. When we remove guns from all, only the criminals will have them. I can say that if every citizen owned a gun, there would be far less crime. Let’s try that. What have we to lose? According to you all, gun crime is so high now it cannot get any worse.

Business was deregulated thanks to the republican revolution. Look at the graveyard that was the airline industry. Look at the deregulation that caused the mortgage crisis. The money needs to be made quarterly in business and that drives their behavior and lack of ethics.
Rapacious greed will rape this country of it’s precious resources because we don’t invest in clean energy. Obama will and create green jobs that can’t be sent overseas!
I think the UN should deal with international criminals, the United States should not occupy a country because of criminals (they call them terrorists).
As for everyone having guns, the saying “If there was an eye for an eye the whole world would be blind.”
The whole world is blind to the greed of an influential few that is driving world events.

Um, Patricia, our Constitution was specifically made to protect us, the people, from the government you seem to hold in such high regard. And our system of government itself was made to protect the minority from the majority, through the separate branches of our representative government. The electoral college itself is brilliant in that it doesn’t rely on the mob’s choice for president, also known as the popular vote, but is instead a more federal system of representation.
Our mad dash towards capitalism mad us a superpower and the economy of the world. Can’t say the same for all the socialist/communist countries. Violence in the marketplace? I know you are using that as a metaphor for the turmoil in our economy, but that is the cycle of things, despite government meddling in the free market. Not exactly seeing business men throwing themselves off of buildings a la The Great Depression. Not yet anyways. And desperate gun violence? If criminals weren’t killing people with guns… they’d be killing them with something else… being doing it since we first developed imposable thumbs….
Thanks Ronald Reagan…. we could use more men like you in our government…

Uh Patricia, the airline industry has thrived since de-regulation took place. Prior, the costs of flying were much higher than NOW, in actual dollars, and this was 20 plus yrs ago. Competition led to airlines such as South West and others- who charged less for the same services as the Big Three…and many more airlines.
Know your facts before spewing off about it.
BWAHAH
“Obama will and create green jobs that can’t be sent overseas!”
And one thing he will do is open up the job market, whats left of it, to illegal immigrants who will do the work you used to do. And golloy sheesh you get to pay the illegals’ food, rent, auto, college tuition, and health care with your taxes. Green JOBS? Get real. Green with illegals picking all the lettuce.
June 15th, 2008 at 12:05 am
Green jobs? I am almost snickering out loud here. The only way the President can create jobs is to get Congress to approve a budget that pays the salaries and wages of a new bureau or department of the already sprawling federal government.
And we don’t invest in Green energy? The big thing ’bout investment my dear Patricia, is that you are hoping for return on your investment, and currently, the technology just isn’t there yet. You can’t just really want something to happen and it happens. The technology will be developed, and there are people investing in it as we speak, making their bets if you will. But even then, your renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power just won’t cut it as the sole options. No wind, turbines and windmills don’t move. Cloudly day. Oops. I’ll go with you if you think nuclear power is an option since it is cleaner than coal burning plants, but the eco-hippies have us all thinking that every nuke plant will be the next Chernobyl.
I think I have found the poster child for the typical Obama voter in Patricia. He’s got her believing his promises of fancy unicorns jumping from cotton candy clouds farting rainbows.

Thanks for correcting Patricia on the airline industry Raven. I do believe the industry has a profit margin in the low single digits, and what is hurting them the most now is the price of fuel. I hear that one of the major carriers, can’t remember which, is wanting to charge for jackets and the used to be complimentary soft drinks.
June 15th, 2008 at 6:05 am
Patricia sholud visit INMATES in PRISONS. During my correctional officer days and brawls, the inmates used to tell me that they didn’t rob any homes with dogs or GUNS in them, or with NRA decals on their cars in their driveways! Imagine that Obamanation and liberals and suckers to be?
June 15th, 2008 at 6:07 am
PS: SCREW THE CARIBOU…PAVE THE WHALE…AND DRILL BABY DRILL TILL IT HURTS!
June 15th, 2008 at 6:54 am
You’ve convinced me. Money should rule. We should get rid of those traffic lights, too. If I want to go, I should be able to go, right? And the FDA is paid off by industry, so why not abolish it altogether. The toy manufacturers don’t need help insuring Chinese communists poison our children with lead toys, bibs, and baby bottles. The medication for their autism will be good for big pharma!
And we don’t want immigrants, do we? We want to work the foriegns in their own backwards countries so you don’t have to make safe workplaces like you do because of the Unions. You can work them all their lives long, even poison and maim them and there’s nothing they can do about it! Human suffering far away from your mansion is so much easier to live with, so cheap and lucrative.
And drilling till it hurts sounds sexy. I’m with you now. Let’s rape Mopther Nature in the ass till she bleeds! Our great grandchildren will talk about it all in their gated, environmentally controlled artificial environment with the television set blaring FOX!
Thanks, guys! You’ve opened my eyes.
June 15th, 2008 at 8:42 am
We’re Number One!
I think I will visit the prisons. See how the other 2,319,258 Americans live. Corrections is a good investment, no?
“Record Number of Americans in Prison

NEW YORK – For the first time in U.S. history, more than one of every 100 adults is in jail or prison, according to a new report documenting America’s rank as the world’s No. 1 incarcerator.”
Why don’t we make them work for pennies making furniture or something? We do already? Why don’t we give great big food contracts to notorious immigrant using dirty flesh producers like Tyson Chicken? Oh, we do? I’m investing in Tyson and also Monsanto, as they will most likely control the food supply, no matter how many Indian farmers commit suicide because of the killer genes in the seeds they are forced to buy. That’s a great investment, too! I’ll get a dog instead of a gun. Gotta take this transition slowly.
You guys will make me a lot of money that I will spend on poison food from China for my dog.
June 15th, 2008 at 9:05 am
Actually Patricia I agree with you on the illegal stuff: We do have TOO many American businesses who hire illegals and who turn their noses on American workers. Tyson is one of worst. They’ve been called on it but not enough. But if you think your guy, Obama, is going to do something about it, you’re wrong. If anything he’s going to make it all legal. Same with McCain.
As for American criminals: We should be proud of this because in the other developed nations many of the very crimes we define as such are not. We have FAR more people than the other nations as well, so it’s no wonder our stats are higher. And, we have a culture that breeds criminal activity-just watch MTV on any given day. It has nothing to do with guns…and everything to do with the lack of respect for human life. Abortion is a perfect example.
June 15th, 2008 at 9:23 am
Patricia,
I think you might have confused liberty with anarchy. We are sure as hell not advocating anarchy here as you seem to imply with the traffic light comment. And the federal government has its Constitutionally mandated role, such as regulating international and interstate commerce. But such bureaucracies such as the Department of Education do not have any Constitutional basis to exist or even be funded. Education is best left to the states, not to the feds.
And no one is against immigration, though once again you paint us with that same brush as most other open borders advocates. It is ILLEGAL immigration that is the problem, not immigration. No country can survive if it doesn’t control the flow of immigrants into its population. But I am for fixing our immigration problems by creating a worker program that documents those people who wish to come here and work, and pay taxes. And I believe that a reinterpretation of the 14th amendment is due. If you are an illegal alien, and you have a child on U.S. soil, that child should not automatically be a U.S. citizen. Legally present aliens, I’d be ok with that option. But no more anchor babies.
And rape Mother Nature in the ass till she bleeds? Thanks for the mental picture. Except we all know that such heated rhetoric is based in the fantasy land in your mind as opposed to reality. Drilling in ANWR, drilling off the coast of Florida, finding other place to harvest our own resource is hardly “raping Mother Nature in the ass till she bleeds” in my humble opinion. Unless you are scared of the evil combustion engine that is….
And lastly, the issue of us having 1 in 100 Americans in prison. Sounds like we have a societal problem where the law is not being respected. That is unfortunate. Perhaps it has more to do with the philosophy of moral relativism and weak moral character that is pushed by hippie liberals. After all, these set of laws might be okay for you, but for me, nah, I don’t think they apply to me. But I am sure that answers for you Patricia is to either abolish the laws outright or not enforce them. After all, we don’t want to have the world look unkindly upon us. And if we just get rid of crimes, then we won’t even have criminals, or prisons, and Europe will call us their enlightened brothers. I am sure that is what you’d prefer.
But I will agree with you on this point… 1 in 100 Americans in prison… it is a problem…
(Patricia, when you start going off on Evil Big Business® and Indian Farmers killing themselves because of killer genes in seeds, you start to sound like you might not be taking your medication.)
June 15th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
I know I should be a good American and get on perscriptions soon. Anti-depressants will make me a better consumer. If pour concrete into my synapses with drugs I won’t think about the poor chickens and Indians.
I do owe you all and Mother Nature an apology for my earthy mental picture. It was early in the morning and all that drilling talk turned me on to anti environmentalism a little too strongly. We’ll just rape her till she’s barren. All hail the ‘end of birth’!
June 19th, 2008 at 3:54 am
The Goreons have brainwashed you Patricia. Too bad! Back to the Death Star II: “I’ll be their in a moon beam minute Frau Vader! Spatlese German white wine chilled, not shaken, black lingerie, thigh highs and FOX NEWS as a nightlight, with the MUTE button ON. Launch sequence initiated, T-Minus 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 … 1, BLASTOFF!!! We have LIFTOFF!!!”
June 19th, 2008 at 8:39 am
Maybe it won’t be so bad to live in a barren world full of guns.
Your sci-fi fantasy is kinda hot!
June 19th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Patricia, good intentions are not enough, and too often are the path to perdition, often due to the law of unintended consequences because people are people. That is the key lesson that we’ve seen from the 20th century examples of centralized planning.
When you observed the wreakage of overly powerful governments, compared with the outcomes of letting millions of individuals express choices in free markets, what you’ll find is that the latter, even though based on self-interest and profit, amost always out-performs the supposedly more “altrusitic” government-centered program approach. Even the few “successes” of U.S. government programs like social security are an inefficient means to a beneficent end and would have been far more fiscally successful had they been allowed to include private investments rather than rely on encumbering future tax revenue.
Obama is wedded to the 20th century centralized governmental-based approach that is proven to lead in most cases to everyone being worse off (except someoff for a tiny elite). Lowered taxes, less intrusive government, and the consequent freeing up of capital for private initiative works so much better – just look at some of our recently liberated Eastern Europe nations to see the wonders of a low-tax environment.
That’s the irony of the upcoming election – seduction vs. solidity.
