-inscription on the Iwo Jima Monument
Three of the six Marines in this photograph died in later fighting on Iwo Jima. A fourth lived the rest of his life a broken man, wracked by survivor guilt. Overall, 6,825 Marines perished in the battle. [Source]

As an addendum to my post, the statement about liberty was inspired by a well-known quote by the German theologian Dietrich Bonnhoeffer: grace is free but not cheap
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was later hanged at the Flossenbürg concentration camp on April 9, 1945, just three weeks before Hitler’s suicide, for his complicity in the failed July 20 Plot to assassinate Hitler.

CT,
May those men’s sacrifice, like those current and past, continue to keep this country free. So much has been given, and I am afraid most Americans just don’t understand exactly what that means…

Thank you Duncan for the photos, the Tim McGraw song (which I hadn’t heard before) and the memorial video about Michael Monsoor. Very moving , these again echoed to me a reminder of the cost of liberty and the high responsibility we have to protect and preserve liberty in honor of those who lay down their lives to preserve it.

Duncan,
I just saw that this video tribute to Michael Monsoor has gained MSM attention, with Fox carrying a story today about it, focusing on the funeral service where all the SEALS in attendance embedded their Tridents into Michael’s coffin, an tribute that gained the notice of President’s Bush, who referred to it during his speech in April when he awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor to Michael posthumously.

Yeah CT, I am surprised that the actions honoring Monsoor by his fellow SEALs took so long to catch on. Its like nobody noticed. Ofcourse, their actions weren’t for the camera or for the media to fawn over. They were for Micheal..

Plus, the media probably didn’t even initially recognize the significance…

Thank you for this lovely tribute. I also loved the song from Tim McGraw.
