Solving the immigration problem is going to be an incremental process, since there is no way that the government can do any kind of massive round-up. Not to mention that the government would screw up the process so badly – with too many innocents caught up in the net and too many civil liberties abuses – that the outcry and resultant public backlash would lead to a surrender on the immigration issue. Not to mention the intervention of activist courts and the active resistance on the part of some local leaders.

No, we’re going to have to do an incremental program, starting with border security and putting economic pressure on illegals living here (increased workplace enforcement, visible punishment for lawbreaking employers). Coupled with the weak dollar exchange rate, this should lead a fair number to self-deport.

If McCain clear states these as the first steps, that’s probably the best we’re going to get. He at least has made some noises in this direction after hearing from the Republican base; let’s see what he says to Hispanic voters, who probably will make or break his candidacy – before putting the H-word label over his mouth.

As far as write-in votes, they’ll probably be thrown out for some procedural error or the such and the vote will never be counted/see the light of day. Better to vote for someone actually on the ballot if you wish to protest a party. But you are correct, McCain is tougher on the war on terror. Ofcourse, when Obama is shifting to the right of Pat Buchanan now in the general elections.. who knows… maybe I’ll have to vote for him? :wink:

I am not sure I can live with myself…having said that, I do realize the main threat to my country is the Islamic threat…and I do respect McCain’s stance on the WOT. I have to sort through the abyss here to come to a decision I can live with. It’s not easy.

I actually considered voting for Bob Barr because Texas will probably go for McCain regardless of my vote… and since the overall popular vote doesn’t matter, the electoral college does, McCain will get Texas’s electoral college. And my conscience will atleast feel clear….

Again I know I have to vote for this asshole. And again, I will forever be in conflict with my conscience on that vote; and will never sleep soundly because of this vote.

That’s about how I feel. If McCain, or any of these politicos, even get an ounce of sense, they will start thinking about being compassionate to the taxpayers whose money goes into supporting handouts to people who shouldn’t even be here.

The only consolation I have is that I live in a state so blue that my red vote most likely won’t matter. I can thus cast a protest vote without affecting either McCain or Obama. Perhaps Picard and Riker would be a good choice.
