I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic

Posted by Raven on August 9th, 2008

Quote of the day:

Mr. Edwards, who no longer holds public office, said in a deeply personal statement that he had lied in previously denying the affair and that he was “ashamed” of his conduct. He said that “over the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic.”

Started to believe? Weren’t YOU always this way Mr. Edwards?

I feel bad for Mrs. Edwards…she who has endured one of the worst slights of all, and had to do so with a smile on her face. I’ve said it before here, and will say it again, sex knows no political party. When rich, famous and powerful men do these things, it is because they CAN. It is because they feel ENTITLED. And society tends to view these episodes with disdain and a small sense of humor.

Asked how he could have cheated on his wife, Mr. Edwards noted that his wife’s cancer was in remission during the affair. He said that after growing up in a small town, he earned success and praise at an early age that fed a self-involvement that led him to believe “you can do whatever you want, you’re invincible, there will be no consequences.” He said he asked his wife not to sit with him for the interview because she had done nothing wrong. “I have to be the man and take responsibility,” he said, adding that he did not need her to shield him.

I daresay that if Mrs. Edwards wasn’t battling her (terminal) cancer, she would have been right there with him…but- because of her illness- he knew the very sight of her with him would garner much turmoil, distrust and hate towards HIM. Her presence would amplify his weaknesses and, sleaziness.

In the end Edwards will come out of this looking as he should: A selfish and weak person. He’s not a real man, even with all this “manning” up he’s done. The fact is he tried to hide his indiscretions; he abused the trust between his wife and himself. And, politics aside, how can people trust him to be honest with them? His political career is over. As it should be.

Ace has an excellent post here concerning the entire Edward’s affair and the lack of MSM investigative journalism.

    A snippet:

The media has two jobs here, which I’ve been seeing all day.

Job One: Reassure the public you knew all about this and are hardly surprised, because you don’t want them to think you’re so out of the fucking loop this snuck up on you. So everyone’s in “Oh, of course I knew, it was all so obvious!” in-the-know cool-kid mode.

Job Two: The trickier one– attempt to explain how it can be you knew all about this but didn’t report it, or bother to do the minimum threshold of follow-up. Bear in mind, the National Enquirer is a small outfit. When they assign three or four people to a story, that’s a substantial fraction of their entire component of reporters and photographers.

Recall: John McCain returned to the United States from Vietnam in March 1973. His wife, Carol, had been in a near-fatal car accident while he was gone. She was overweight, on crutches, and 4 inches shorter than when McCain had left. McCain ended up divorcing Carol for Cindy Hensley, his current wife. Carol has remained mostly silent on her marriage to John, except for one notable comment to a McCain biographer: “John was turning 40 and wanting to be 25 again.”

There were legal complications, too. The Los Angeles Times reported in June that McCain obtained a marriage license while still legally married to his first wife. McCain suggested in his autobiography that he divorced Carol months before marrying Cindy. In fact, that period was about five weeks. He also said that for the first nine months of his relationship with Cindy, he still “cohabited” with Carol. Social conservatives were never McCain’s base, but yes, it could get worse.

For the most part, the media have politely skirted around this episode of McCain’s life. (Not to mention other unflattering moments.) For one thing, it’s long past. McCain has since developed a reputation for credibility and transparency. (Post-Keating Five, that is.) And, unlike Edwards, he told the truth about his deviance. “My marriage’s collapse was attributable to my own selfishness and immaturity,” McCain wrote in his autobiography. “The blame was entirely mine.”

But with Edwards’ infidelity front and center, that could change. In recent weeks, McCain’s ads have taken a turn for the personal, comparing Obama to vapid celebrities like Paris and Britney. Now Obama is coming under increasing pressure to retaliate. The Obama camp has never publicly raised McCain’s marital issues, nor would it. But insinuation, coupled with euphemisms about “trust” and “commitment,” can go a long way. In an environment filled with personal attacks on both sides, you can bet McCain’s past will become fair game. The Edwards news even gives McCain’s detractors a convenient pretext to raise the subject. So you heard about Edwards ditching his sick wife? Wait till you get a load of McCain …

    Actually hectorvalector,

this is old news and I have posted on this here before. I’m not a fan of McCain. If you bothered to read this site before assuming, you’d know this. McCain was horrible to his first wife; and his temper is legendary. It’s been known for decades. Get with the times dude. Trying to make an issue out of something that has already been ***issued*** to death is so liberal of you.

Oh and I just read the cover of a tabloid down at the corner store…something about Obama cheating on his precious Michelle. The National Enquirer is a cheap disgusting read, but it’s never been wrong since Carol Burnett sued the publication in the early 1980’s for a error filled article. Now, they are very very careful with what they print…and they sit on things until they have solid proof. Alas, this John Edwards case proved to be true as everyone cried, “Oh, it’s just the Enquirer!”

Rave- please tell me that this is a joke. You’re smarter than this.

    PEACE :letsroll:

  6. Raven Says:

Look it up Buns. It’s true. LOL I didn’t believe it either. They’ve never been wrong. Keep in mind we probably see 5 or 6 different tabloids at the checkouts; I never buy them but do muse myself with the silly headlines.

I saw another one today saying Laura Bush has bought her own home in Texas as she prepares to divorce GW after his term is finished. Yah never know…could be true.

    :hmm:

  7. Bunny Colvin Says:

Ok, then. You made me do it, Rave.

In 2005 the Natty Ink reported that Ws been a drinkin’ again. As they are never wrong now rational Americans must ask themselves if dubs’ reckless governance might be a result of alcohol abuse- whether long term or “binge drinking”. If dubs and Dick were takin down a bottle of bourbon the night they decided to invade Iraq, I want to know about it. If Rummie came over with another bottle and the three played Twister, I want to know. But I wouldn’t really be concerned about the Twister part as you and your kind in all likelihood would. You are the party of BJ obsessionists. And pedophile Congressmen.

Apparently the National Inquirer has somewhat higher standards than the other trash I see @ the supermarket. But they still stretch the truth all too often.

    PEACE :letsroll:
