Is this an extortion threat? Bring It On.
Posted by Raven on August 9th, 2008
This past week I have been out of the loop, so to speak, on all the issues and news. Between taking care of the kids, working, playing in my garden and other LIFE stuff, I totally missed the story about this Accountable America bullshit.
I just read about it at Wizbang…JayT does an excellent job fisking the threatening message sent to potential GOP donors.
This letter — although I’m sure it was vetted by the best Democratic lawyers dirty money can buy — is nothing less than a veiled extortion threat. Tom Matzzie, the leader (and only named member) of Accountable America, openly describes it as “going for the jugular.”
So far, the reaction around the blogosphere has been pretty much as expected: anger. And that’s a GOOD thing.
I AM PISSED. And, this crap has inspired me to DONATE. I wasn’t going to do it. Not one penny. But sometimes things happen that change my mind.
Tom Matzzie
JayT adds:
So, just who is this assclown causing all the fuss, anyway? Who is this “Tom Matzzie?”
Good old SourceWatch to the rescue.
* Former Washington Director and lobbyist for MoveOn.Org
* Formerly ran the Campaign To Defend America, a group to raise money for liberal causes, in the mold of Americans Coming Together (who got fined most of a million bucks for breaking the laws in 2004)
* Headed up the now-defunct (or maybe not — Matzzie is quoted as saying both) Americans Against Escalation In Iraq
* Joined with David Brock — founder of Media Matters For America — to start Progressive Media USA, with the intent of attacking John McCain.
* Served as Director of Online Organizing for the 2004 Kerry-Edwards campaign.
* Served as Online Mobilization Director for the AFL-CIO.
* Helped fight against privatizing Social Security for the Campaign For America’s Future.
* Board of Directors, Progressive Majority.
Turning the tables:
I am hereby issuing a call for any and all dirt on Mr. Matzzie. I don’t care if it’s illegal, immoral, unethical, or just plain embarrassing. If it’s bad about him and it’s true (or, at least, plausible), I wanna know about it. And to follow his model, I’m offering a reward.
I’ve offered to add to the reward pool. And as stated above, this has inspired me to DONATE…Better yet, I’m getting my guy to donate to GOP candidates- lots of them- thru his business. Go ahead Mr FatMatzzie- come after us with your veiled threat. We’ll see how far you get with this.

This “extortion plan” sounds a lot like the infamous K Street Project to me. We’re you as outraged when that evil scheme was exposed, Raven?

I’m seriously thinking of doing the same thing, Raven… Don’t know if I can really stomach donating to the *National* party, but there are some State (well, in my case, “Commonwealth”) candidates who are definitely worth it!

Actually Bunny this is much worse than the example you bring up.
This letter is a veiled threat that some might see as an actual threat and all sorts of problems can arise.
One thing: It seems this silly letter has lit the fire under many GOP asses to donate some money.
Unintended consequence. The exact opposite of what was desired.

LOL well Kat I only donated to the people who I feel will actually represent me. They are out there, mostly in local elections. And my guy is going to send the most he can legally, to several of the big name GOP camdidates.

Pffffffffffffff. Rave- McSame and almost every other (r)epuke’s campaign is dead. You can pump all your hard earned cash into them but you’re wasting your money. I think you’d be better off buying a few books. You should start with Conservatives Without Conscience by John Dean.
(NOTE: This is not an attempt to “change your views” or “make you do anything on a blog that you pay for”. It is merely a suggestion. And to be honest with you, I read several books a year written by “conservative authors”. Rush, LoofDawg, Coulter, and Uncle Milty Friedman just to name a few. It never hurts to know what the other side’s (some would say enemy’s, but not me)thinking and planning. (You also may want to catch up on The Art of War by Sun Tzu, as so many of your repubber brethren have).

I have many thousands of books Buns. My walls are all lined with books great and dull; I have books by liberals and conservatives and everyone in between as well as extremes. I have books of wars, about wars and the art and science and planning and logistics of war. My library is probably far more extensive then yours could ever hope to be.
And far be it for you to know, there are MANY good candidates out there who stand for real and true conservative principles. I call them virgins, LOL, cause once they hit DC they see nothing can be done to promote real change, because the current lot in DC is so corrupt and dishonest- Dems and Repubs together. The big club needs to be disbanded, and sadly they use each other to amplify the discourse this country is in. Political motives outweigh political action. Outside interests take heed over real solutions. Both sides are guilty but the liberals are the worst. They lie. They dramatize. They cheat. They pander. They distort.

“My library is probably far more extensive then yours could ever hope to be.”
So much for civility.
The Pet Goat and other children’s books do not count in our Raver vs. Bunny Library Contest. You’d need the Cliffs for most of the books I read, sweetheart.

You had me up until the word “guilty”. Oh well, that’s what blogs are for.
