Pirate Island

The Boston Globe has an article about Matinicus Island, off the coast of Maine. It’s also known as Pirate Island, off Penobscot Bay…about 20 miles out. I love it there because of the lack of modern gadgetry, real down to earth people and pioneer style living.
Walking through salty fog on dirt roads, past lupines and beach roses, we see nobody, and then we see a man. He is very tall and broad shouldered and very bald and very suntanned, and he is changing the oil in his ancient pickup with no license plates because you don’t need them on Matinicus. He comes over to say hello, and he welcomes us to the “pirate island.”
Like much of Maine’s coastlines, Matinicus is often foggy and surreal. I call this heaven. I was there last summer and took these pictures.

If you like modern amenities and conveniences, you won’t like this place. If you’re seeking peace and quiet, relaxing and simple fun, I recommend spending a long weekend out there.

Looks like a neat place, but it’s a long drive from Japan. I guess it will have to wait a couple of years.

It’s absolutely gorgeous here. It really is…I love it and the relax factor is high. That and the low tech environment make it my heaven in New England. Of course beer and food are not in abundant supply- one must bring their own. But that’s ok…BYO takes on a new meaning here.

What? You weren’t going to tell me? :)
Looks awesome!!!!! It looks exactly the way I would picture a seaside town to be.
