Georgia Bigfoot Is….An Opossum?

Posted by Bigfoot on August 16th, 2008

As Duncan reported a few days back, two men in Georgia claimed to have found the body of a Bigfoot. Yesterday, CNN put out this report, which included a photo of the alleged carcass, lying in what looks like a refrigerator. This is not the first time a Bigfoot-like creature has allegedly been seen in parts of Georgia, where it has been known as the “Happy Valley Horror” or the “Belk Road Booger”.

Because Bigfoot, also called “Sasquatch”, is thought to live in forested areas of the west coast states, the idea of such a creature living in the eastern part of the U.S., such as in the Appalachian Mountains, was rather interesting. Could there even be a population of these creatures extending as far north as my own Maryland? However, common sense and my scientific background (B.S. in Chemical Engineering) dictate that such claims need to be backed up by evidence. A bit of healthy skepticism was in order.

My skepticism was boosted by the fact that the two Georgians, Bigfoot-hunting hobbyists Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer, had found a spokesman in Tom Biscardi, whose earlier claim to have captured a Bigfoot turned out to be a hoax.

The Georgia Bigfoot claim does not appear to be faring any better than Biscardi’s. According to Yahoo News, the DNA turned out to be mostly from an opposum.

One of the two samples of DNA said to prove the existence of the Bigfoot came from a human and the other was 96 percent from an opossum, according to Curt Nelson, a scientist at the University of Minnesota who performed the DNA analysis.

Hmmm, these results don’t exactly fit into the primate family tree, do they? Opossums are marsupials, and are thus closer to kangaroos than to humans and apes. Even so, Biscardi isn’t giving up.

Biscardi said the DNA samples may not have been taken correctly and may have been contaminated, and that he would proceed with an autopsy of the alleged Bigfoot remains, currently in a freezer at an undisclosed location.

If the thing in the CNN photo really is the carcass of a Bigfoot, I would think that samples for DNA testing could be taken from its internal tissues, where contamination from external contact with an opossum or other animal would be unlikely. Surely, someone familiar with such testing would know that. Sorry, Mr. Biscardi, but between a university scientist and a proven hoaxster, I’ll believe the scientist.

    AHA!

Two possibilities you are not considering. First, perhaps big foot is the result of breeding between a Human and an Opossum! Betcha didn’t think of that one! The other is that perhaps bigfoot really is related to the opossum instead of the primate family. After all, we share something like 98 percent of our DNA with chimps, and something like 95+ percent DNA with bunny rabbits? So, like, Bigfoot could still exist and just happen to share 96 percent of its DNA with the opossum. GOTCHA! Bigfoot is real. I saw him splattered on the side of the road the other day.

    :retard:

Guilty as charged, Duncan. I should have realized that Cheney and Rove were up to something at that “undisclosed location”.

I don’t see how anyone could be sceptical of such compelling evidence. Next you’ll be saying Cheney shot that guy just to suppress the story.

    From the website

Whitton and Dyer haven’t done much to satisfy skeptics. They previously posted a video of the purported bigfoot on YouTube in which Whitton’s brother pretended to be a scientist, then announced it was all done in fun. And a recorded greeting on Whitton’s phone formerly claimed he and Dyer were leading expeditions to find not just bigfoot but also the Loch Ness monster and leprechauns.

Ok…this is the same cop that shot himself in the line of duty…maybe some hallucination off the pain killers he is prescribed? And everyone knows that a car salesman is “trustworthy”? I admit I am not a believe, but to add the Loch Ness monster and Leprechauns is a bit amusing. Even people who believe in bigfoot were skepical of this one.
