Katahdin

YAY!! The hike up Katahdin was awesome and I’m putting up pictures of the view…as the trails were pretty easy and not worth photographing.
The summit.

More views from the summit- it clouded up a bit and got a little wild with a rain storm but no biggie like it is on Mt Washington.

We stayed one more night at the Basin Lake at the base, and came home this afternoon. Back to reality…and work, family, life. Twas nice to be out of world for a couple days though. I would love to live up there and someday I might do that.

Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous.
Almost makes me wish I lived in the northeast. Almost…

The winters are bad though. Most people who aren’t used to the weather get depressed and leave the region after a couple yrs of it. Somewhere I have some pictures of this place in the winter- nasty. NASTY. COLD, windy, furious, icy, snowy.
I love it. I love New England weather because it changes so much each season, so I never get too used to, or have to deal with, winter, spring, summer and fall.

I have relatives that just moved away from Maine after living there for 29 years. They got tired of the cold winters, (said they were getting too old for that %$#@)but they say they miss the beauty of the state, and the cooler, less humid summers. They especially miss the call of the loons from the lake that they used to live on.

Julie,
Tell your parents to visit this website to hear the call of the loons. (Or Big Dweeb’s site).
Though Ravenous and I agree on very little, I’d never doubt her choice of real estate. Maine is beautiful.
PEACE

Yes, that’s some great scenery. I like the sharp-edged rock with the clouds behind it.
Maryland, where I live, is in the northeast…almost. We have part of the Appalachian trail, most of it along a ridge named South Mountain. But nothing like Mt. Katahdin.

Last summer we hiked Mt Washington which is much more challenging and took longer:

Great photos, which remind me of the beauty of Maine, though I haven’t been there in probably forty years. Never did climb Katahdin, though I did climb Mt. Washington.
While I miss the four seasons (having grown up in Pennsylvania), I don’t miss the summer humidity and the penetrating winter dampness. Don’t know if I’ll end up moving back East somewhere in a few years, but am considering it once the kids move out.

I went up Mt. Washington back in 1991 – by train. I thus do this :notworthy: in the respective general directions of Raven and CT. The closest thing I’ve done is hike down and up part of the Grand Canyon in 1990.
