I don’t exactly know where this sticker on the back of one of the seat tray’s on my flight out to Kaleefourneeyaa was made (but I took a pic for posterity’s sake):
Seriously. Someone here please tell me they see the problem here also. This is just a tiny little sticker on a plane, out of thousands of stickers, but it is ohhhh so simple to create and one of the most seen. If this sticker was made in America… then we are truly, truly screwed…
:wahh:

The word FLOATATION can be spelled this way that way
FLOTATION

Either is correct.
It should be FLOTATION IMO…but both ways are correct in all dictionaries.

While this word, according to Merriam-Webster Online, does include a “variant” spelling, its not one that I believe I have ever seen, ever. In fact, almost every other sticker on the back of the seats in this plane had the “main” spelling, not the “variant”….

Yeah. You found it. Merriam’s lists it as the “variant”…. much like that article you commented on from Britain with the prof saying that we should accept “alternate” spellings of commonly misspelled words…

LOL like I said, I prefer FLOTATION as that is how I learned it. Adding an A to it makes it harder, I think. My understanding of this, from my daughter who is attending writing classes, is they came up with the spelling to go with the word FLOAT. When we spell FLOT we have a different meaning altogether, so some colleges right here in the US now use FLOAT.
Strange how these things happen and we don’t know it. If it weren’t for my daughter, who is a junior in college. I wouldn’t have known there was a variant to the spelling.

Yeah, just goes to show ya…. just when you think you know everything… someone comes along and shows you they’re smarter…
