Guess what those of you who voted for Obama expecting Hope and Change…you did

Posted by civil truth on November 17th, 2008

Duncan’s post earlier today reminded me of this:

1978

2005

We’ll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet,
And the morals that they worship will be gone…
And the men who spurred us on,
They sit in judgement of all wrong:
They decide, and the shotgun sings the song

I tip my hat to the new constitution,
Take a bow for the new revolution,
Smile and grin at the change all around,
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday,
Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again,
(Don’t get fooled again)

The change, it had to come;
We knew it all along;
We were liberated from the fold, that’s all.
But the world looks just the same,
And history ain’t changed,
’cause the banners, they are flown in the next war

I tip my hat to the new constitution,
Take a bow for the new revolution,
Smile and grin at the change all around,
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday,
Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again,
(Don’t get fooled again)

No, no, no, no

I’ll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I’ll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?…

Nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me,
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye,
And the parting on the left,
Is now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I tip my hat to the new constitution,
Take a bow for the new revolution,
Smile and grin at the change all around,
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday,
Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again,
(Don’t get fooled again)

No, no, no, no
Don’t get fooled again…

Meet the new boss,
Same as the old boss…

Yes indeed, Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…at least when it comes to “Hope and Change”

Now I know 30 years ago seems like the Stone Age to many, but when The Who sang this again at Live 8, was anyone listening actually paying attention to the words rather than just grooving on the music and feeling righteous saving the world?

Not enough, I’m afraid. At least John McCain didn’t pretend to be other than what he was…

I remember, almost 30 years ago in college, watching the movie from which the 1978 clip comes.  My hair has gotten thinner and grayer since then, just like that of guitarist Pete Townsend. Won’t Get Fooled Again is one of my favorite songs, with the coolest organ part ever. That Live 8 concert, if I recall correctly, was not about collecting money from ticket-buyers to give to charity, like Live Aid, etc., but to urge the G-8 governments to give money to the developing world.
