Thanksgiving Favs
Posted by Raven on November 24th, 2008
Thanksgiving is a few days away and once again, I will be working. Nursing staff always work holidays. I have been thinking about the meal itself- turkey, potatoes, stuffing, and so on. Not too many people know that I CANNOT STOMACH turkey.
Yep. I can’t eat it. I get sick instantly. Why? I think its all in my head. When I was very young, I caught a tummy bug at this time of year. I was so sick I can remember to this day, all the misery and the many many times I threw up….and it was Thanksgiving Day of course. So I have always associated turkey with being sick.
Now, I love stuffing. And mashed potatoes. And TURKEY gravy. And everything else about the meal. I even like handling the bird, stuffing it, cooking it, ect- I like the SMELL of it as it’s cooking as well. I just can’t EAT it. I usually have a nice juicy grilled Angus steak instead.
What is the best part of Thanksgiving meal for everyone? The food: Favorites? TV Programming: Football? or Parades? Desserts? mmMMmm Apple and Pumpkin and Pecan Pies or, hot Cranberry Cake with Maple Syrup icing?? A day off from work- I think most people get TGiving AND the following Fridays off (you’re all spoiled rotten)….

well the sides are often the best part, I plan on smoking the turkey with hickory chips, it tastes awesome and as a bonus I can increase my carbon footprint.

Rob, please feel free to smoke as much turkey as you want, and send the resulting CO2 over to MD. We’ll take all we can get. (bbbbrrrrrrrr!!)
I love all the sides except sweet potatoes. My favorite would have to be the stuffing, covered with gravy. My favorite dessert is pumpkin pie with cool whip. When I was younger, my job was to eat one leg of the turkey, with my brother (the next oldest after me, I have 4) getting the other.
As for what else Thanksgiving is for me, I’ll have to post something about that.

Turkey is good if it’s not overcooked. I go for most of the sides: mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes with pecans, though my fave is string beans with almond slivers toasted in butter. As for dessert, whipped cream covers a multitude of sins.
You’ve got to spill the secrets on that one.

I like sweet potatoes, but I’m very picky about how they’re cooked. Now, a good ol’ down home sweet potato casserole? Honey, y’all just better skip dessert! Mmmmm-MMM!
And, actually, I’ve also got a Curried Lamb (although I usually use veal) Stew that has sweet potatoes that is DE-licious
Now, Raven, don’t you hold back on your buddies, here; we’re expecting you to post that recipe in time for us to make it for Christmas dinner, at LEAST! LOLOL

I don’t care for sweet potatoes either. In fact, GAG me. For some reason I just can’t eat them.
Now real potatoes- YES….baked, mashed, boiled, grilled, yummy yums. I esp like mashed with real cream and real butter, salt and pepper! Just plain ole mashed taters are SO good. Piping hot and a big dip in them for the gravy.

My favorite is my mom’s apple stuffing. It’s not Thanksgiving until I smell that throughout the house.
As for the actual meal itself I skip the plate and go for the serving platter. Why go back for seconds when I can get it all the first time?
Then I put on my favorite pair of fat pants, light a fire, and snooze on the couch until late in the night.
Then I spend all day Friday lounging around the house digesting the meal the night before, and avoid the malls!

I LOVE SWEET POTATOES!
And I love football. And I love turkey.
And I love my cousin’s cheesecake. It is a different kind each year, and they’re always delicious!
