Happy Thanksgiving

Posted by Bigfoot on November 26th, 2008

Thanksgiving for me has generally been a time of family reunion. When I was young, and we lived in west central New York, Thanksgiving would involve a trip to the town in northeastern Pennsylvania where my parents both grew up. Both grandmothers knew how to cook up turkey and a few side dishes. Mom’s mom even had a coal-fired stove. During my teen years, dad changed jobs and moved us down to central Virginia, which made trips to Pennsylvania less frequent due to the increased distance. We have celebrated Thanksgiving in my parents’ house in Virginia ever since.

During my freshman year at Virginia Tech, Thanksgiving took on an interesting new twist. Back home on break, while enjoying the turkey prepared by my mom, I had a realization: “We’re eating my mascot.” At the time known as the “Gobbler”, he would later be called the “Hokie Bird”, but would always be based on a turkey.

Another thing most of the family enjoy during Thanksgiving and the following few days is watching football. The Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys host NFL games on Thanksgiving Thursday. NCAA games follow on Friday and Saturday. This coming Saturday, Virginia Tech will play against its oldest rival, the University of Virginia, in a game called the Commonwealth Cup.

We also have a tradition of determining who will buy whom a Christmas gift, among the siblings and their spouses. Names go into a bag, and are then drawn out. The honor of taking the bag around to each participant has been handed down to the youngest nephew or niece who can walk.

As I prepare to head south to Virginia, here’s to a happy and safe Thanksgiving to the writers and readers of And Rightly So!, and to the three F’s of Thanksgiving – Family, Food and Football.

And a very bountiful thanksgiving to all who come to ARS; it’s authors and others!

We had a great day- I worked a 12 hour shift and had TWO meals! I am so stuffed I look like a big ole turkey myself. And feel it too. LOL

We just eat and enjoy the day together; usually we go to a rented lodge and invite all family and friends. THEY did so this yr- but as I said, I worked. Now I am home, relaxing and sipping on hot cider and whipped creme!
