Unemployed? We got yah covered for 46 weeks
Posted by Raven on December 3rd, 2008
Will someone explain to me how this will help the economy? I know it’s not supposed to do that, but paying people to stay unemployed is not good for the economy is it?
Unemployed workers in Massachusetts will get more help from the state and federal governments.
Those exhausting their jobless benefits in Massachusetts can collect unemployment benefits for up to seven additional weeks, following an extension recently approved by Congress.
This extension follows an earlier, 13-week extension approved in July, meaning unemployed workers in Massachusetts can stretch their initial 26 weeks of benefits by as many 20 additional weeks.
People can stay on the unemployment rolls for 46 weeks now? How sweet it is. That’s a lot of motivation to get back to work now isn’t it?

Bah, why even bother working, especially if the job pays less than unemployment… might as well stay home and watch Oprah and eat cheetos..

It seems to me that enough people are unemployed, our economy will suffer even more. So, by enabling people to STAY unemployed for such long periods of time will make things much worse, much faster.
It used to be: Lose your job? Got 6 weeks (unemployment “benefits”) to get another job or you’re on your own. We should go back to that. It used to be, also, that people on Unemployment, HAD to be out there really seeking work. Not now. “work” is defined as something “similar” to what used to be…in terms of pay. Automatically this means those 46 weeks are justified in the eyes of some people. And it used to be that people would save enough money to cover three to six months of unemployment. Hah. Who does that now? Seriously?

My wife and I were talking about emergency savings last night, a good 6 months to a year of living expenses in the bank. But for Americans in general to do that, they’d have to be responsible with their money and not blow every paycheck every time…

It’s not easy to do- save up a yr or more of money to live on. I have that. It took some work- uh make that overtime work- to get me there- but if something happens to my job- I’m all set for over a year now. Even still, I would get a job right away- flipping burgers if need be- cause ANY income is better than NO income. I’m not the type of person who would live on unemployment. I wouldn’t even sign up for it.
I’m too independent for that.

Times are rough and times are hard, people need as much assistance as possible and I’m all for it. It is not an easy task to find employment for most people these days, even with the Christmas Holiday Shopping, retail is not hiring!
