Virginia Tech Wins the Orange Bowl

For Hokies such as myself, the year has started out on a high note, as our football team defeats Cincinnati 20-7 in the Orange Bowl, our first victory in a BCS bowl game. This is only VT’s second win in a “major” bowl, the first coming after the 1995 season, over Texas in the Sugar Bowl. (This was before the BCS, during the days of the Bowl Alliance). VT won even though three starters were out for the game.
After taking the opening kickoff, Cincinnati scored a touchdown in two minutes – and nothing afterwards. Virginia Tech intercepted four passes, and late in the game, stopped Cincinnati on a 4th and goal. The picture shows senior cornerback Victor “Macho” Harris (#1) leading the ensuing celebration. (In case anyone is wondering, his knickname comes from that Village People song, bestowed by his father.)
Some historical notes: Cincinnati defeated Virginia Tech in the 1947 Sun Bowl, the first bowl game for either team. Nothing like getting revenge after 60+ years. More recently, Cincinnati gave Virginia Tech its most recent shutout loss in 1995. The two teams also met in 2006, with the above-mentioned Macho Harris returning an interception for a touchdown.

What’s a Hokie?

The term “hokie” has no literal meaning. It comes from a football cheer composed way back in 1896, which starts with, “Hoki hoki hoki hi, Tech, Tech, VPI”. Later on, an “e” was added to “hoki”.
