60 Car Pile Up In NH

Posted by Raven on January 11th, 2009

Damn stupid people who don’t know how to drive in weather.

DERRY, N.H. — Nearly 60 vehicles collided on northbound Interstate 93 in Derry, shutting down a portion of the highway between exits 3 and 4 Sunday morning.

WMUR News 9’s Aaron Kellogg reported from the scene that a charter bus at the front of the crash, which was transporting a group of boy scouts from Massachusetts, tried to avoid another car that had gone out of control. Other cars became involved, leading to the pileup.

Another bus, transporting the University of Massachusetts women’s hockey team, was also involved in the crash. Some of the women inside the bus wrote on a dry-erase board “We are OK” as a car blocked the door of the bus, preventing anyone from getting out.

Hmm….10 inches of snow was predicted and indeed that is the amount we got. Why, I must ask, were buses out on the roads in the midst of this storm?

Emergency crews transported 19 people from the scene with injuries. Eight were taken to Parkland Medical Center, four were taken to Elliot Hospital and another two were taken to Catholic Medical Center. All were treated for minor injuries. It is not clear where the others may have been taken.

Hospitals have Disaster Plans just for these types of things. Good thing!

Kellogg reported the southbound lanes continued to move unimpeded by the crash. Snow was seen on the highway, but officials did not immediately identify a cause. The Associated Press reported that traffic is being detoured to Route 28. New Hampshire state police have asked that motorists avoid Interstate 93.

Uh,…how about this: Someone was going TOO fast on the slick highway. They braked and slid. The car behind them braked and slid…and so on.

  1. NH Hates Liberals Says:

Wow, this is a rare sight! I mean, a disaster and the little communist Governor John Lynch is no where to be found! LOL

One disaster he did not cause…

  2. Cheryl Says:

What was that rule of thumb about leaving a gap of one carlength for every 10 mph? It should be even longer in bad weather, but who ever listens?

  3. Flex Says:

It sounds like the bus filled with boy scouts is the cause of the 50 car pile up. Did the bus need to stop on the highway? It appropriate to stop in the breakdown lane, but not the highway. Sue the bus driver, or the boy scouts!

  4. Shawn Says:

I HATE 93 North in NH for this reason. Idiots speed like crazy and don’t know hoe to drive. Even more true in bad weather. The worst are the Massachusetts idiots who bring their fancy crazy driving North of the border.
Slow down all you stupid people and leave room between cars.
It is NEVER the condition of the road but how fast you are going that causes accidents. If it is bad out and you can only do 30mph then that is what you do.
    People are stupid.

  5. Noel Says:

Looks to me like people should have been going about 25 or 30. Two weeks ago I HAD to drive in the ice storm on this very stretch of road. I was in the right land going maybe 25 as were other safe drivers. We were doing fine but the idiots were passing us on the left at 55 to 60. There were lots of spinouts and accidents. Wake up and slow down.

  6. Raven Says:

I guess the bus stopped to prevent an accident- it stopped because an SUV in front of it, a ways in front, had stopped. The road was pretty icy and covered with snow on top…slick conditions.

A couple people who were there, who I know, said some of the vehicles were going really fast considering the conditions: Pick ups and SUV’s ramming along at 50 mph– damn fools- they get what they deserve here.

I commute between Boston and Manchester. Sad to say, NH drivers are every bit as impatient, discourteous, and likely to be driving a flashy car as those from Massachusetts.

Most of the people who complain about Massachusetts and Massachusetts drivers just moved here – from Massachusetts……

  8. I was there! Says:

Honestly I can’t believe what I am reading here. All these negative comments from people that weren’t even there!! Well, I was..and you even have a picture of my car posted here. How about all you idiots that like to speculate what happened get all your facts straight!?!

First of all, traffic was moving steady between 30-40mph. Which is exactly the speed limit posted during snow storms.

Second, the accident occured at the bottom of a hill. Therefore, all of us that were towards the back of the accident had absolutely no warning that cars were blocking the road on the other side of the hill. I happen to know that I had at least a football field distance between myself and the car in front of me. At first I saw brake lights and thought maybe a plow was ahead slowing traffic, when those brake lights turned to headlights I knew there was trouble ahead. How about the moron above(Shawn) that says its the drivers fault, goes out and tries to stop his car from 30mph and see how long it takes, then maybe add snow and ice into the mix and try it again? Maybe then you’ll stop making false acusations against innocent people that could have been seriously injured or worse…

How about readers of this realize we all should be thankful that more people weren’t hurt and for those of us that were- be thankful that it wasn’t more serious. This accident looked like a scene out of a movie…from being a part of it, I can’t believe that there were no fatalities.

I happen to know that I had at least a football field distance between myself and the car in front of me…
Get serious you lying sack of shit. That’s the funniest line I’ve heard yet about this…and I have a few friends who were really there. And I have stopped my rig, from 30mph, on an icy snow covered road. It doesn’t take a football field. Stupid fuck. Lies get you no where.

When you can be honest come back and comment. Everyone was driving too fast for the conditions, plain and simple.

  10. I was there! Says:

Again another ignorant jackass that has no idea what actually happened. I’m not going to try and defend myself to someone that has no clue of the truth. Frankly, I’m not going to waste my time. I was there and Raven was not. Keep on living your pathetic life passing judgment on things that have nothing to do with you…

  11. I was there! Says:

By the way…Raven, if you are so certain of the cause of this accident, why does your post titled Winter Storm Warning #14 start off like this-

“The weather outside’s gonna get frightful…before nightfall…and I’m SICK OF ALL THE DAMN ICE and SLOPPY, SLUSHY, SLICKERY. Untreated, un-sanded, unsalted and barely plowed roads.

In all my life I have NEVAH seen the roads so BAD. Is it winter or is it the state’s very poor road care skills this year????”

After reading both of these blogs, I can see you’re just a sad and lonely individual that posts blogs in between your Dungeons and Dragons games…Maybe you should take notes on this advice- when trying to portray yourself as an intelligent reporter, BE CONSISTANT, people won’t respect you if you flip sides…and get your facts straight!- “and I have friends that were really there” you might as well just say “my mommy told me”. As far as I’m concerned you have just cost yourself any bit of credibility that you may have had.

Go ahead and post a comment calling me names and claiming that I am a liar…it’s humorous for me as well as the rest of the readers to see how lame you are.

  12. Raven Says:

    Uh…open mouth and insert foot.

Everyone’s complained about how bad the roads have been. It’s the subject of a headline at the NH UNION LEADER. People KNOW the roads suck. So, they adapt their driving to the conditions. Or, at least smart people do. Not everyone is smart though, and those who drive along like there’s no slicks or slides get into accidents. Such as the 50 car pile up. Granted, it’s the first few vehicles that start these messes, but if you were really a football field away, you could have stopped long before you came close to the action. Admit it. You were driving to fast. As was everyone else.
