Dogs, Cows, Humans, and a Polar Bear

Posted by Bigfoot on March 11th, 2009

An interactive map published by the NY Times allows you to find the immigrants, all the way back to 1880, just before my own ancestors came over from various parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The data is broken down into ten-year intervals and various countries and regions.

Now that the presidency of Barrack Obama has started, Funny Or Die has come out with the Black Friend Finder. On a more serious note, a black family in Oak Park, Illinois is conducting what they call the “Ebony Experiment”, buying everything they need only from black-owned businesses.

In a manner similar to our own EPA a while back, the governments of Ireland and Denmark have proposed taxing farmers for their cattle and other livestock, because the animals produce methane, a greenhouse gas, when they belch and fart. (Hmmm, I wonder if those Alaskan caribou, which are so precious to the environmental movement, ever belch or fart.) Meanwhile, the current winter continues to produce record low temperatures, and even a rare polar bear trip to Iceland.

Whatever else we may make of this winter, it’s been a good one for dog sledding.
