Cherry Blossoms
Posted by Bigfoot on April 19th, 2009
I recently had some time to visit downtown Washington, DC. The cherry blossom trees, a gift from Japan way back in 1912, were in full bloom. Here is the Jefferson Memorial, with some nearby trees, and lots of visitors.

Another view of the Jefferson Memorial, which is said to be based on Thomas Jefferson’s home, the Monticello, itself based on the Pantheon temple in Rome.

Some cherry blossom trees along the Potomac River. On the other side is Arlington, VA.

Some more trees along Ohio Drive.

These trees have blossoms in different colors.

I also stopped by the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. Here’s FDR in his wheelchair. Unfortunately, his face is mostly in shade.

FDR reportedly wanted a memorial about the size of his desk. Instead, he got 7 and a half acres in West Potomac Park.

Despite his handling of the fascists and imperial Japanese, his domestic policies deserve a few pigeon “bombs” on the brim of his hat…

Of all the times I have been to DC, I have yet to be there to see them in full bloom. Might try to get up there in early May.

Just beautiful BF. Thanks for the pictures. Now, do these blossoms have a scent? I am thinking they must; and I’m trying to SMELL ‘em all.
Spring has arrived up here. The maple trees have big red buds that are starting to bust out; the dandilions have begun their attack in the grass; oak trees are budding over. Things are greener.
I won’t miss winter, for the first time in my life.

You’re welcome Duncan. When I get time I have a couple more TX thingies to add. I can’t find any NH ones though, or MD ones.

Funny you should include Roosevelt in the picture show. Aside from wartime leadership, old FDR so believed in government as the solution that he extended the Great Depression until the 1950s – when Eisenhower managed to right the economic ship.
Obama knows nothing of this. Accordingly, that is why our Leader is now pursuing expansion of government as the solution to economic ills.

MAS, I’ve seen the Jefferson memorial quite a few times, but never the FDR memorial, which is much newer, so I had to check it out, even though his domestic policies were counterproductive. And I’m sure BHO, like the left in general, believes the myth that FDR put the economy back on track after Hoover trashed it.
Raven, the dandelions have shown up in my yard, too. I have a tree that produces pink flowers every spring. After its blossoms fall off, the result is a strange mixture of pink and green in my mower’s grass-catcher. The cherry blossoms have scent, but I don’t think it’s too strong.
