Here’s a ROLL YER EYES article.
THURSDAY, Nov. 27 (HealthDay News) – A new study suggests that cutting sodas and other sugar-sweetened drinks from school cafeteria menus will have little effect on teens’ overall consumption of the beverages.
No. Really?? But how can it be? The Nanny says no soda. This means obesity will be history! Oh wait…the Nanny only controls what happens at school. She has no say in what goes on at home. But is there more to this? I think so. And I’m no rocket scientist who commands a rather bloated salary.
Because these drinks are believed to be a major contributor to increasing rates of childhood obesity in the United States, many schools across the nation are banning them or curbing their availability to students. To assess the impact of this strategy, researchers followed 456 students at seven schools in southern and central Maine over two school years. Four of the schools reduced the availability of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) for one school year (intervention schools), while the other three took no action (control schools).
Soda is TEH evil poison. We all know it. Let’s BAN IT! Yeah. That’ll work!!
The researchers found that consumption of the beverages decreased among all the students, regardless of whether they went to an intervention or control school.
WHA?? SAY WHA??
“This study suggests that successful reduction of the availability of SSB can occur in public high schools. However, these data suggest the effect of reduced availability of school SSB on consumption of SSB by high school students may be limited,” wrote researcher Janet E. Whatley Blum.
“A better understanding of beverage consumption patterns may be needed to determine the efficacy of school food policies on those youth susceptible to obesity,” she added.
Well I can tell you, Ms. Blum, that school is NOT the ONLY place kids eat at. Gee, they go to this place called home every day; they reside there on weekends as well. The kids eat out; they eat at friends homes…and YOU cannot control this. At least not yet. Dumb bitch.
It’s bad to see so many fat kids around. But the problem isn’t anywhere NEAR as horrible as some wish the world to think. In fact when we see even medical people cannot tell the difference between a truly overweight child vs a normal healthy-weight child, we know we’re in trouble.
Child and teen obesity is not good. Neither is hyped up, skewed up, manipulated data being used to justify all these silly studies and other grand SCAM research efforts. We stand to lose many freedoms if this onslaught of false information continues to erode the health headlines as factual NEWS. The media swallows these studies like the children swallow the soda as reported. We need to be skeptical and use some critical thinking skills. All these reports are often based upon real, honest JUNK SCIENCE.

Thanksgiving for me has generally been a time of family reunion. When I was young, and we lived in west central New York, Thanksgiving would involve a trip to the town in northeastern Pennsylvania where my parents both grew up. Both grandmothers knew how to cook up turkey and a few side dishes. Mom’s mom even had a coal-fired stove. During my teen years, dad changed jobs and moved us down to central Virginia, which made trips to Pennsylvania less frequent due to the increased distance. We have celebrated Thanksgiving in my parents’ house in Virginia ever since.

Thanksgiving is a few days away and once again, I will be working. Nursing staff always work holidays. I have been thinking about the meal itself- turkey, potatoes, stuffing, and so on. Not too many people know that I CANNOT STOMACH turkey.
Yep. I can’t eat it. I get sick instantly. Why? I think its all in my head. When I was very young, I caught a tummy bug at this time of year. I was so sick I can remember to this day, all the misery and the many many times I threw up….and it was Thanksgiving Day of course. So I have always associated turkey with being sick.
Now, I love stuffing. And mashed potatoes. And TURKEY gravy. And everything else about the meal. I even like handling the bird, stuffing it, cooking it, ect- I like the SMELL of it as it’s cooking as well. I just can’t EAT it. I usually have a nice juicy grilled Angus steak instead.
What is the best part of Thanksgiving meal for everyone? The food: Favorites? TV Programming: Football? or Parades? Desserts? mmMMmm Apple and Pumpkin and Pecan Pies or, hot Cranberry Cake with Maple Syrup icing?? A day off from work- I think most people get TGiving AND the following Fridays off (you’re all spoiled rotten)….

I hope readers like apples. I’ve been apple blogging for a week now. And yep- we went out to pick more yesterday in the wet and wild apple farms over in Hollis. It was not just a job; it was an adventure.

It’s apple season up here. We went apple picking a couple weekends ago and the harvest wasn’t quite READY…so my friends and I went over to Hollis NH and picked several dozen pecks worth and I did some cooking.
I love autumn…it’s forever associated with apples up here, and the food takes on a different flavor and scent this season.

Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each. (Henry David Thoreau)
One of my favorite times of year has just about arrived: Autumn. In New England, this means crisp cool mornings and warm but breezy sunny afternoons. The daylight time is shorter; there’s a distinctive scent in the air.
At the local stores, apples are starting to appear in abundance in the produce sections. The pumpkins are getting quite big at the farms and the corn is almost ready for harvest.
