The Police Waited 43 Minutes

Posted by Raven on 6th April 2009

All the recent shootings have the left screaming for more gun control. It’s fairly certain Barry is going to try to restrict our access to guns. This article highlights WHY it’s so important for citizens to keep their 2nd Amendment rights. DO NOT DEPEND UPON POLICE and LAW ENFORCEMENT to protect you. They won’t.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) – Even if police officers had immediately entered the immigrant center where a gunman had just shot down 13 people, the victims’ injuries were so severe that none would have survived, a county prosecutor said Sunday.

But police didn’t enter the American Civic Association until nearly 45 minutes after the first 911 calls came in at 10:30 a.m. Friday. They began removing the wounded about 15 minutes after that.

It took more than two hours to clear the building. Survivors reported huddling for hours in a basement, not knowing whether they were still in danger after the gunman, 41-year-old Jiverly Wong, killed 13 people.

Had a citizen been carrying a gun they might have been able to stop the carnage. But no…people seem to think the police will protect them. It’s clear they will not. Policies now direct SWAT TEAMS to go into these situations, which is fine so long as the TEAM can be a real RAPID RESPONSE. Even then though, it’s oft too late.

The first 911 calls came in at 10:30 a.m., police Chief Joseph Zikuski said at a news conference. The callers spoke broken English, and it took dispatchers 2 minutes to sort out what was happening, he said.

Patrol officers arrived at 10:33 a.m., five minutes before a wounded receptionist called police to report a gunman in the building, Zikuski said. Police had earlier said it was that call that brought them to the immigration center.

When police arrived at the scene, the gunfire had stopped, so they believed there was no “active gunman” in the center and decided to wait for the SWAT team to arrive, Zikuski said.

The SWAT team entered the building until 11:13 a.m., 43 minutes after the first call to police.

The huge problem with this policy is the fact that VICTIMS will be left to die. In this case, their wounds were too traumatic, but who knows, in other situations? If we cannot depend upon law enforcement to come in and RESCUE us, it’s pretty clear to me we must STAND UP and defend ourselves against the shooters in the first place.

Get a gun. Learn to use it. Carry it with you at all times.

The Customer vs. The Robber

Posted by Raven on 26th March 2009

If you’re going to go around with a gun, holding up stores and other places, you better be prepared to die. And rightly so.

An afternoon shootout at a busy Burger King restaurant in Miami left a potential robber dead and the customer who shot him seriously wounded.

A potential robber? Oh puleeze. The man would have BEEN AN ACTUAL ROBBER had he not been stopped. Love the wording here.

The robber entered wearing a ski mask. He approached a clerk, showed his gun and demanded money, said Miami police spokesman Jeff Giordano.

A customer eyed him and the two started arguing. The customer had a concealed-weapons permit and his gun — and the two exchanged gunfire.

The robber crumpled to the floor and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Good for the customer. The good guy here, who saved the state of Florida tens of thousands of dollars in legal costs got hurt- but I bet he knew the risks. It’s high time people starting standing up to these thugs who think it’s acceptable to rob stores and restaurants at will.

Lesson: Don’t leave home with a gun unless you plan on using it. And don’t assume you’re the only one with the power. Guns don’t kill people…people kill people. We need more folks like this customer.

British & Canadian Snipers, with the Supergun

Posted by Bigfoot on 15th February 2009

(Via HotAir)

In Afghanistan, British snipers have been using the L115A3 Long Range Rifle, known as “the long”, to take out bad guys from a mile away. One sniper, known as “Yuppie”, showed off his camouflage suit, which kinda reminds me of, well, a bigfoot. Or maybe a wookiee.

Canadians use the same gun in training for Arctic warfare.

I thought there was a ban in effect to prevent exactly this..

Posted by Duncan on 12th February 2009

A British family settling down for a dinner party were held up by an armed gang who burst into their house and threatened their 5-year-old daughter.

The gang of up to five men, all wearing hats or hoods with scarves covering their faces, demanded that the terrified owners and their two guests tell them where they “kept the drugs.”

The family could not give the gang what they wanted because the men had targeted the wrong home in Croydon, South London.

Frustrated at their lack of success, the gang threatened to hurt the young girl and a shot was fired.

The family and friends were waiting for another couple on Saturday night when there was a knock at the door. When the homeowner opened the door he was confronted by the masked gang who forced him back into the dining room.

He suffered minor injuries as he was bundled back into the house and was hit with the gun.

The little girl began crying and the gang said they would hurt her unless the adults handed over the drugs.

Eventually the gang was persuaded that there were no drugs in the house, so they took everyone’s cell phones and jewelry.

“The line we are taking is that this was an entirely innocent family and the gang have got the wrong house and thought it contained drugs,” a police source told The Times. “It was absolutely terrifying for the family. They are traumatized and do not want any of their personal details released.”

Police believe the handgun was fired accidentally.

“We are following several lines of enquiry, one of which is that the suspects may have targeted the wrong address,” Detective Sergeant Simon Mitchell said.

If there is this ban on handguns, where’d the bad guys get theirs? OHHHHHHHH. That’s right, they are criminals, don’t give a hoot in hell about the law, will buy one on the black market, and terrorize law-abiding families who don’t have firearms of their own because they’re banned…. for The Children™ ofcourse.

This defense seems doomed to be as convincing as “the dog ate my homework”

Posted by civil truth on 31st January 2009

Oopsies

In the first public indications of the line of defense that former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle is planning to make against 2nd-degree murder charges in his shooting and killing of an unarmed suspect without evident provcation, the above argument slipped out at Mehserle’s bail hearing on Friday before the judge sealed the proceedings.

Mehserle’s lawyer explained that the officer “intended to fire a Taser at Grant [the suspect] when he instead pulled his service pistol” and thought he was firing a Taser instead of his gun.

This is the shooting case here on New Year’s Day that caught national attention when a protest demonstration turned into a looting spree in downtown Oakland for several hours, following distribution of a cell phone video that tracked the shooting and appeared to demonstrate that the suspect was under control by another officer, face down on the pavement, when Mehserle fired the fatal shot. He subsequently quit his position rather than agree to routine questioning, and otherwise refused to cooperate in the investigation before he was arrested in Nevada on a murder warrant.

I have been reserving judgment on the case to await the wheels of justice to establish what took place, especially given the hysteria that has sprung up. Nonetheless, this statement left me agog. My initial take:

That’s an impressive defense you’ve got going, Mr. Raines. I think that even Dallas Academy is able to play better defense that that.

Class, imagine how this defense would play out in court:

Your honor, after Officer James pulled me over, I really intended to pull out my wallet to show him my identification. It was totally unintentional that instead my Glock ended up in my hand and that somehow it went off and fatally struck Officer James in the chest and head.

Why do I see the same hands up again?

The judge at the bail hearing evidently was not too impressed either. He set bail at $3 million, as the news story relates:

Rains said Mehserle made a mistake Jan. 1, believing he was firing a Taser, not his handgun, at Grant. Rains said some witnesses described hearing Mehserle tell other officers, “Get back, I am going to take him.”

But other statements from witnesses and officers suggest Mehserle told fellow officers after the shooting that he thought Grant had a gun, court documents state.

Jacobson said the two versions of the story make Mehserle’s defense “inconsistent.” If the officer believed Grant had a gun, he wouldn’t have used a Taser to defend himself, he would have used a gun, Jacobson said. Therefore, the fact that Mehserle first announced he was going to “take” Grant — but later told others he thought Grant had a gun — makes his story unbelievable, the judge said.

“There appears to be a change in the story,” the judge said. “His willingness to change his story appears to me that he would be willing to do so to avoid the consequences.” That change, coupled with the fact that Grant’s death occurred “under the color of authority,” made Mehserle a danger to society, the judge said.

Jacobson also said Mehserle’s decision to travel to Nevada after the shooting and the fact that he is unmarried contributed to the decision to declare him a flight risk. “When he felt under pressure he didn’t run to his parent’s house in Napa, he ran to Nevada,” the judge said.

From my vantage point in the stands, unless something picks up on the defense, Mr. Mehserle should be planning for a long, long vacation in the Big House.

This isn’t an overworked public defender, in charge; Mr. Raines is prominent local defense lawyer.

By hiring Michael Rains and his Pleasant Hill law firm, Mehserle turned to one of the best-known defenders of Bay Area police officers suspected of misconduct. Rains is frequently quoted as a legal expert by media outlets, including The Chronicle, and provided commentary on Mehserle’s case until he was hired.

Yet, it’s hard to see how this initial defense strategy even gets past the giggle test. Am I missing something here?

Gun Friendly States Have Lower Murder Rates

Posted by Raven on 5th January 2009

Via Instapundit & Say Uncle:

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says North Dakota has had only two murders so far this year. He says that’s the lowest yearly number for the state in at least 30 years.

Stenehjem says North Dakota averages about 11 homicides annually for the past several years, after a high of 22 in 1993. 16 were reported last year.

TWO?? The method of choice was stabbing.

Where guns are allowed, with little restrictions, one will see lower rates of violent death.

Maybe I should move to ND.

Gun ownership faces rocky future under Obama’s rumored Attorney General nominee

Posted by civil truth on 23rd November 2008

Among all the drama surrounding Obama’s rumored nomination of Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State and the various speculations around other posts, Barack Obama’s rumored nominee for Attorney General, Eric Holder has largely remained under the MSM radar. Of course, this is no surprise with Obama already being compared with FDR and Abraham Lincoln. I fully expect the MSM to beatify Barack Obama on January 20.

In any case, when the One promised Hope and Change™, by Hope he evidently must have been referring to Arkansas, given the number of people who served in the Clinton administrations being promoted to high positions in the upcoming Obama adminstration.

However, given that the Attorney General set the tone for the legal and prosecutorial direction of the U.S., one would hope that someone promising to Bring American Together™ would select an official free of partisan baggage and a reputation for rooting out corruption.

Instead, we face the prospect of Eric Holder as our new Attorney General, who served as deputy attorney general in the Clinton administration and whose records does not inspire confidence for Change, to say the least.

One key action that Mr. Holder undertook in the waning days of the Clinton adminstration has at least gained some MSM attention: his unsavory role in the pardon of billionaire fugitive Marc Rich, most notably elucidated in a recent NYT op ed by George Lardner, who covered the pardon for the Washington Post at the time.

In his piece titled A Pardon to Remember, Mr. Lardner paints a disturbing portrait and lays the case for more careful scrutiny of Mr. Holder’s actions. His concluding paragraph states the following:

Mr. Holder never came close to meeting that standard. He had the last word at Justice on clemency petitions and he saw to it that he had the only word. He brokered one of the most unjustifiable pardons that an American president has ever granted.

However, what has garned even less attention is Mr. Holder’s abominable record on gun control and the Second Amendment, which he evidently considers to be only worthy of target practice.

David Koppel over at the Volokh Conspiracy writes a devastating exposé of Mr. Holder’s record on 2nd Amendment issues. Key points:

At the oral argument before the Fifth Circuit in United States v. Emerson, the Assistant U.S. Attorney [i.e. Holder] told the panel that the Second Amendment was no barrier to gun confiscation, not even of the confiscation of guns from on-duty National Guardsmen. As Deputy Attorney General, Holder was a strong supporter of restrictive gun control. He advocated federal licensing of handgun owners, a three day waiting period on handgun sales, rationing handgun sales to no more than one per month, banning possession of handguns and so-called “assault weapons” (cosmetically incorrect guns) by anyone under age of 21, a gun show restriction bill that would have given the federal government the power to shut down all gun shows, national gun registration, and mandatory prison sentences for trivial offenses

Holder played a key role in the gunpoint, night-time kidnapping of Elian Gonzalez. The pretext for the paramilitary invasion of the six-year-old’s home was that someone in his family might have been licensed to carry a handgun under Florida law. Although a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo showed a federal agent dressed like a soldier and pointing a machine gun at the man who was holding the terrified child, Holder claimed that Gonzalez “was not taken at the point of a gun” and that the federal agents whom Holder had sent to capture Gonzalez had acted “very sensitively.” If Mr. Holder believes that breaking down a door with a battering ram, pointing guns at children (not just Elian), and yelling “Get down, get down, we’ll shoot” is example of acting “very sensitively,” his judgment about the responsible use of firearms is not as acute as would be desirable for a cabinet officer who would be in charge of thousands and thousands of armed federal agents, many of them paramilitary agents with machine guns.

Forewarned is forearmed!
